I’m worried my internship interview with my state’s office of homeland security went poorly. Does anyone have advice?
Homeland Security professional here, I’ve had interviews go both ways and end up with offers when I didn’t expect them, and get passed over when I thought I nailed it.
You can’t read others’ minds so best you can do is exactly what you are doing - reflect, learn, and prepare for what’s next.
If they didn’t tell you in the interview when to expect to hear back, I recommend sending a short thank you email reiterating why you think you are a good fit (one sentence, don’t over do it) and ask when you should expect to hear back.
If they don’t reply or you or already sent a thank you, give it two weeks and then follow up.
For your next interview, if there is time to ask questions at the end, consider including “Do you have any concerns about my skills or qualifications as they relate to the essential duties of this role?” and “What does your interview process and timeline look like from here?”
If you have free time and want to bolster your credentials, consider free courses from the Emergency Management Institute. IS 100, 200, 700, 800 as well as IS 120 are the ones I recommend to start.

August 14, 2023I was offered an interview for a pathways internship in homeland security, why’s next?
No on SF-86. They might consider that presumptuous. Fill one out yourself and keep it though in case it helps you be ready in case you get the job offer, but they don't need that. Expect questions on disagreeing with a supervisor, prioritizing work assignments, coming up with innovative solutions, and dealing with stressful situations. Those seem to be pretty common. Use the STAR (situation, task, action, result) method to answer questions. Make your answers thorough, but succinct. Feel free to use your volunteer and school club experiences as well as prior work experience. Only use school experience if you have nothing else, or it's directly asking about school/academic/research type things. On your credit report, check for negative marks. Bills you never paid, poor payment history, and especially outstanding judgments. Fix those. Not having a super high score or much history if you're young is totally fine and normal.
