How do you find range and domain in general?
Domain is the set of possible X values in a function. Range is the set of possible Y values in a function. To find the domain, set the denominator equal to zero and then solve for X. Whatever X is is what CANNOT be in the domain. For example: 1/x, the domain is all real numbers except 0 because the denominator cannot be equal to zero. (Cannot divide by zero.) And easier, if there is no denominator and no square roots or anything like that, you know the domain is all real numbers. The range is easier to decipher by graphing. For most polynomials, you determine if there is a point that does not exists. For example, y = x/(x-1), you than see when x =1, you get 1/0 which doesn't exist. For y = tan(x), if you know your trig, this is sin(x)/cos(x), so try to solve for when cosx = 0. When x = pi/2, you get 1/0 again which dies not exist. Over time you will learn the domain of specific functions. For example, y= ln(x), the domain is x >0. This is something you either memorize or once you understand the application of ln(x) you intuitively know the domain.

Hello! Hopefully the algebra tag is correct :) This is my math homework. I understand (or, I think I do), that domain of function is X value and range is Y value. I know the rest of this problem, I just for some reason can't wrap my head around how to find the domain of function and range of function. Also, what is the difference between the infinity and all real numbers? It feels like I'm so close to getting it but not quite there. I've tried Googling it but nothing I see explained makes complete sense, so maybe if possible "dumb it down" for me? Thank you in advance!!

First thing you always check if the function is continuous ( no breaks in it, no holes). Yes it is. Then check for arrows; arrows mean infinity and depending on the direction you are analyzing it can be -inf or +inf. Domain: all values of x from left to right. the arrow is going left (down) we don't care about down just left so we notate that arrow -inf. Now right: the arrow goes right (down): +inf. Domain (-inf, +inf) this means all the numbers possible from -infinity to +infinity or ALL REAL NUMBERS. Range: all values of y from Down to UP. Down there are two arrows both going down( one would have suffice) so -infinity. UP no arrows so the y -value for that is 4. Range (-inf, 4] everything from -infinity to 4 including it since there is not break at 4. It takes a min to wrap your mind around this. Keep practicing!
