Its probably best to prime them with white primer paint so that the red doesn't influence the new colour. Because it will. And it will look awful. (Ask me how I know.....!) Answer from whoops53 on reddit.com

How to Paint Furniture Without Sanding
May 29, 2025 - I’ve painted about 8 or 9 pieces of furniture, and I’ve gotten better results with each one. Here is my simple step-by-step guide to painting furniture without sanding. Prep your furniture by removing any hardware you plan to replace. Wipe down the piece to remove dust. Here’s a “before” photo of my latest project, my Nana’s cedar chest. Apply a primer ...

r/upcycling on Reddit: Can I paint over this without sanding?
November 8, 2024 -

I have these 4 Red chairs and I love them because they are very comfortable, but they don’t fit the aesthetic I’m going for in the house anymore. Can I paint over them without sanding? I hate sanding because 1) makes a mess; 2) even with a mask the amount of particles it puts on the air attacks my asthma; 3) it’s soooooo tiring and time consuming 😅

colors going for (undecided if each it’s going to be one color or if they will all have the same): yellow, blue (teal or baby blue), mint green, rosy pink or orange. The palette is not 100% defined because i need to confirm with my roommate as well

I also will be painting the table legs to match it all. (it’s white so def easier)

Any advice would be much appreciated it!!! 🙏🏼

Discussions

I’ve never refinished a piece of furniture before. Do I need to strip the paint? Or can I skip straight to sanding? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Going to be painting a very similar colour to what it is now
Clean the piece with water and dish soap and let it dry. Remove the hardware (knobs, handles and hinges). Take the doors and drawers off. Sand all the surfaces you want to paint with 150 grit sandpaper, just to roughen up the surface, not to remove paint. That makes the new paint adhere better. Clean it again. Maybe use a filler to fill in any dents. Ask a shop near you what would be suited for that. Just show a pic. Probably need to sand that flat to make it blend in. Clean again and let dry. Choose a painting suited for indoor application and use in a colour you like (again, ask the store). Paint it, with brush or roller. Make sure you go in one direction only, so you don't get stripes and blotches in your paint. Let it dry. Sand it very lightly and apply a second layer. Let dry and done! It's super easy, you got this :) More on reddit.com

Paint various furniture white without sanding it?
Use some deglosser (also called liquid sandpaper) before you paint. I'd also recommend using an oil based primer if you're painting older furniture to prevent any of the old stain from bleeding through. More on reddit.com

How To Easily Paint Furniture {NO Sanding!} | Thrifty Decor Chick | Thrifty DIY, Decor and Organizing
March 15, 2024 - If your furniture will get heavy use, it never hurts to do a coat of BIN primer before starting. When I paint furniture or doors, I always start with a brush on the grooves and smaller details first: Then I immediately follow up with a foam roller on the flat parts: Other than prepping well, the other key to a durable paint job is letting each coat cure (dry) long enough before adding another. I did three coats of paint total, letting each coat dry overnight. OK, OK...there is a little bit of sanding involved, but nothing crazy!

Can varnished wood be painted over without sanding or priming first? - Quora
Answer (1 of 3): I’ve never tried this, but think about something. The slicker a surface is, the more difficult it’s going to be to get a new round of anything to stick to it. An extreme example of this is applying paint to a sheet of glass. Done directly, that paint would scrape off with ...

May 31, 2022 - Really, we’re just talking about painting. So hold the brush like that – you’re not doing this and don’t flip it back and forward. So if you’re holding it like that… even touching there, so you’ve got real purchase. And just brush over, every which way, be quick, it’s not little tiny, tiny brush strokes – it’s big brush strokes and cover it all over. You might have noticed there’s no sanding, no priming.

July 4, 2017 - You don’t want to sand all that detail and get all the bleedthrough so I would use an adhesion primer like Slick Stick. A primer that bonds to shiny surfaces (like glass, metal, plastic etc) will work well on a varnished detailed piece.

January 12, 2023 - I have repainted it several times since, but with the first rendition I knew that I needed to prep it with the lacquer finish it had. I didn’t sand it and instead chose to prime it with a stain-blocking water-based primer.
