I bought new shower faucet replacement recently and tried to install the hardware. The hardware does not fit on the current valve. Or am I looking at it wrong? Is the old hardware still on? I can’t tell.

You have an older Moen Moentrol valve. You bought newer Moen Posi Temp trim. They make adapters, but they don't always work great. You should be able to find basic chrome trim kits for Moentrol valves.

You need a Moentrol replacement kit. Looks like you purchased a posi temp.

I am currently have these shower faucets on two of my showers and looking to update it for something more modern.

I saw a couple shower faucet sets at Lowes and home depot. Can i just swap out the trim and handle or do i need to install the whole assembly including the valve? Box states it come with Posi-Temp valve.
is it possible i can use the trim and handle with the existing valve?

Yep. They make replacement kits as well as retro kits. If the guts to the valve are good and your not replacing the shower then updating trims is a easy and cheap way to get a new look. Screw patterns between moen and delta differ sometimes, be sure to know your screw hole spread in the plate.

Most likely you will need a new rough in valve for a new faucet I prefer Delta over other brands
