What is the difference between Google Maps Lists and Google My Maps?

They both allow you to create custom maps with pins, but there are some key differences, such as offline access, layer capabilities, customizable pins, and creating/editing within the app. Check out the details on how Google My Maps compares to Lists (including a features comparison table).

Is there an app for Google My Maps?

There is no separate Google My Maps app, but you can view your maps within Google Maps. Just make sure you’re signed into the same account, and all your maps will sync.

(There used to be a dedicated My Maps app on Android, but this was deprecated in 2021.)

Are custom Google My Maps available offline?

No, but keep reading for a workaround and alternative.

One of the biggest complaints about Google My Maps is that you can’t download your custom map and pins to use offline, unlike the rest of Google Maps.

However, I have been able to use it in areas with spotty reception. I pulled the map up when I did have reception, and I left it running in the background. It would stay loaded in the app and I was able to pull it up to look at it later when I was out of reception. I’m not sure I would rely on this as a surefire workaround, but it can work in a pinch.

Another alternative, especially if you'll be traveling in another country where you'll be completely offline, is to use Google Maps Lists, which can be edited from desktop or your phone but don’t offer the option for separate layers, unique icons, or adding photos.

Look at the toolbar under the search bar to add elements to your map. To see what each icon does, hover your mouse over the icon. The pin icon is one of the most important tools. In order from left to right, the icons are: undo, redo, move/grab, place a pin, draw a line, directions and measure · Once you know where you would like to place a pin, type the location into the search bar and press enter. My Maps will automatically take you to that location on the map:

r/GoogleMaps on Reddit: Accessing 'My Maps' in Google Maps
May 27, 2023 -

I've put together a map in My Maps with a lot of pins. But I can't seem to access this in the latest version of Google Maps on Android. I Used to be able to go into my saved maps and access it from there, but can't find this option now.

My Maps app is no longer supported and doesn't show all maps, and when I save it to Google Drive and go to open it, I get an error saying it can't open the map.

Please help! I spent ages putting these pins in, but have no way to access on my phone. Or if you have any recommendations for similar apps let me know.

Always download the offline map for the area you are going. You can navigate without cell service (great for wilderness areas too). I suggest you do this for where you live too. You can save pins on Google as “travel plans”, “want to go”, etc. and you can add labels that are searchable and notes. You can see and edit these notes on any device (phone, computer, tablet, etc.) that is logged into the same account. I don’t believe you can import files into google, but I never looked into it. I am not much of a planner. My husband is, and he has an app that you can input your itinerary. I normally Google the places we will be visiting and add a ton of saved places to Google Maps. I normally select “stars” for places we planned on going, the “blue suitcase” as other attractions that sound interesting but may not have time, and “green flags” for restaurants/coffee/cafes. If we get done early or get hungry, it’s easy to see attractions and food that is nearby. Any place I love and recommend, I change to a “heart” and delete everything else (unless I plan on returning). It works for me. I do it on personal and work trips.

Google maps is my best friend when I travel. And I do a lot. I find locations that I want to visit and I save them as "favourites" in google maps beforehand. Then when I am visiting the place I activate Wifi and Location settings on my phone. I do not even need actual wifi to be connected or to have data at all. That allows me to see my location on the map and general direction towards sites I want to see. Been doing that for more than 5 years. Works on andoid and ios in most western world
