I am following up for anyone that reads this to to confirm this printer is an absolute disaster across multiple examples in the field. From an IT guy who has fit small, and medium sized offices with LaserJets for almost 30 years I am telling you that we're done with HP after this model. I cannot recommend this printer, and HP's support of the unit is a complete and total failure. Do yourself a favor, don't.

A couple of weeks ago I asked if anyone knew if a printer would be back in stock online. I recently checked and it's back.
I'll trust anonymous folks on reddit more than on a costco website. Does anyone have a review of this HP printer / scanner?

Before you choose a printer, check how much replacement ink is going to be. The HP can be quite expensive. Has anyone had experience with the HP M283fdw? My parents are looking at it. Costco has it for $399. They want a laser printer that can print color, and one that can do two sided printing, and they want an all-in-one. This one seems to check all of the boxes but just wanted to see if anyone had a better suggestion or could point out any pitfalls with this model.

I have the slightly older version (M281cdw), and while it works well when it works, I've had to struggle with three different aspects of the device, which I understand are inherent in the family of printers. First, updating the firmware is a difficult process if you are using anything other than a fairly "standard" configuration Windows machine (I run Windows, macOS, and two distros of Linux on discrete machines, all for various purposes). Invariably, I need to use the Windows computer to update the printer. Not a frequent, but a very annoying, problem. HP has admitted to issues in that regard. Second, configuring for custom printing jobs and retaining those configurations for future iterations is not intuitive, and can be challenging if you're not fairly familiar with HP devices. Finally, HP's software for macOS has admitted flaws that HP is taking a very long time to fix. It's now been weeks since they removed certification (improperly) for several drivers, and they still haven't fixed the issue. FWIW, after years of buying and running HP printers, I've recently pivoted to Brother for my primary printer, and have no plans on going back to HP once my M281 dies.

I just received mine today so I can't offer too much feedback but here goes First I have owned many HP and Brother printers both home office and business lines. I have not found one brand better than the other but I have have found differences between particular models of both brands. Don't buy based on brand you should compare the actual models. Unpacking and setting up my new M283fdw printer took under 5 minutes. Take off 3-4 pieces of tape on the outside of the printer, put paper in, plug power cord in, turn on power, run setup, enter wifi SSD and password everything else was done automatically. I wasted more time confirming that was all that had to be done to setup the printer. I really worried that I would have to open the printer and remove packing materials and tape, but nope that was it. Print quality was excellent even color on standard copy paper was beautiful. Speed was excellent. Two additional minutes to add printer from each workstation. It has a lot of nice cloud features including connections to google drive. It automatically creates an email address that you can email docs to for printing (not sure why but its cool). The one problem I had was setting up its management interface on hpconnected.com it kept redirecting me to hpsmart.com which did not see any of my hp printers. I called HP support spent an hour on the phone with them and they then informed me they were having problems with their servers. This is really not that important to me, the touch screen control panel and the local url allow me to manage just about everything I need. I will wait to hear back from HP and see if they fix their server side issues.
