Take Night mode photos with your iPhone camera - Apple Support
On supported iPhone models, Night mode automatically brightens photos and captures more detail in low light. While your iPhone sets the exposure time automatically, you can adjust it manually if needed. Tip: Use a tripod for even more detailed Night mode photos. Open Camera on your iPhone.

Practicing “Night Mode” for the first time, any advice?? Shot on iPhone 13 Pro.
I’m allllll about astrophotography with the iPhone. Looks like you have the right idea and technique. I was giving my 13 Pro Max some exercise tonight as well but I’m in a heavily light polluted area. If using the default camera app, I always have a few constant rules: Always set night mode to max Always use a tripod of some sort. If not, find flat surface to lay face down on try to always trigger the phone with the watch if possible. don’t trust auto focus. It has a hard time determining focus with starts play around with exposure value use the primary lens for most everything, telephoto and wide were “nah” but that may have changed with night mode available on all lenses now. use this app to target backgrounds and even stars to make them bright. take photos in RAW More on reddit.com

r/iphone on Reddit: 13Pro night photos are awful - any advice?
April 20, 2023 -

My 13Pro takes blurry nighttime pics that aren’t the true color of the sky. Specifically, I want to take photos tonight of SuperMoon.

Practiced last night - used recommended settings and got unclear, bad results. Have seen other people’s 13 pro moon pictures that showed shadows and details and were clear, and they said they didn’t use any filters or 3rd party editing apps.

Also, when I zoom in on the actual photo, it blurs. Other people’s pics stay clear.

I used 2x in Photo, focused lock on moon and slid the lighting bar down low. Flash and night options were off. Also, the brighter attached photo is what it looked like before lowering the lighting bar. Why does it make skies look so much brighter than what I see with my eyes? Many thanks for tips.

I use an iPhone (12 mini) and am also an amateur photographer who loves taking astrophotography pictures. First thing you need to realize is how bright the moon is. It is very difficult to take a single picture and not blow the highlights of the moon to expose for the foreground. The second problem is that the moon is very small. Even with a 300mm lens, the moon looks tiny. You'll need to zoom in to take a picture of what you think the moon looks like. When you zoom in the chances of taking a shaky picture increases quite a bit. My wife has an 11 Pro and also likes to take astro photos. I would recommend turning on night mode. Brace yourself and your phone as much as possible. Look into shooting RAW which will allow you to make more adjustments to the picture afterwards. Also remember that moon pictures by themselves are usually very boring. You need some context in the photo. Try and find when the moon will rise early in the evening. That isn't always possible and it might not be a full moon when it rises (or sets) early. Just to give you an idea of what is possible, here are some shots I took of the moon using $3,000+ worth of camera gear. All of these shots are a single image (not a composite): This picture was shot about 30 minutes after sunset on the supermoon in April 2021. My lens was equivalent to 700mm and I exposed for the moon and tried to bring out the foreground. Honestly, this is a pretty shitty picture but I like it because the moon looks huge. This picture is the lunar eclipse in May 2022. My focal length is 300mm. That's a $5,500 lens (I bought it used). I would consider this a decent picture. This picture was taken about 30 minutes after sunset but since it was a lunar eclipse, I was barely able to bring out the foreground details. This picture was taken during a very early moonrise. It was taken at 7:37 PM and the sunset was around 7:20 PM. This was also a super moon. As far as moon pictures go, this one is pretty shitty as well. You can barely tell that's the moon but the church are foreground are really cool. I'll edit this post later and include pictures my wife took with her iPhone of some of these pictures. tl;dr - Most moon pictures suck. It's too bright and too small.
