Hard to beat! If for whatever reason you still want to buy a brand new ink, they also of course sell new bulk packages at a discount, but the refill is a wayyyyyyy better deal IMHO.

Inkjets are not frugal. Laser is the way to go. I bought a Brother laser printer in 2011 and have only switched out the toner once at a cost of $47. That's $11/yr to operate. Can you beat that?

I use to work for Hewlett-Packard. they laid me off in 2009 in the middle of the recession so believe me I have zero loyalty to them. I worked in the fabs making the printheads and on the back end assembling the cartridges. I have worked on pretty much every single aspect of printer cartridge creation. Refilling ink is not as frugal as you think it is. The main reason is ink cartridges are designed not to be refilled. HP (and other companies) spend no small amount of money developing ink and patenting it. It may be a surprise to some people, but the ink in there is not like plain old ball point pen ink. It is designed specifically to interact with the electronics that vaporize and spray the ink. of all the patents associated with an ink printer, the majority are on the chemistry of the ink. It is also designed to provide superior results, look good and above all last on the page over time and with exposure to light. Refilling runs a high risk of failing and when an refilled ink cartridge explodes it can completely ruin the machine. Companies care about this because when you refill a cartridge and it explodes and breaks your printer, or you page looks terrible. you blame the printer and the brand. NOT the refilled cartridge. People will throw their hands up and say "Freaking HP printers!"when their refilled cartridge spews ink everywhere. ignoring the countless good prints they got with the branded cartridges. Ink is also very corrosive. running ink through the printheads longer than intended will impact the print quality, over time they will fail giving you dead nozzles that will leave streaks on your print and allow the ink to ooze out. Long story short is refilling impact quality and can hurt your printer. to really be frugal, consider using a laser printer instead that almost universally has lower per page costs, and actually assessing your needs for a printer to begin with. to you REALLY print so much that you can't go to the library, staples, costco or whatever and get your print job done there? These days most people have home printers for convenience, not necessity. we are more and more a paperless society. (you know, probably why I got laid off!)

Consider how much color printing you actually need. Monochrome laser is way cheaper and dependable. You can always outsource color printing if needed now and then. If youre not printing photographs and just need a splash of color for your documents, consider color laser.

We have an HP Photosmart 7520 that uses 564 (xl) and always refill because we print a lot of images. Do your own research on what model will work for you, just check that Costco refills it because they don't do every cartridge. The refills have saved us a ton of money vs buying new cartridges

I've got to be a bit slow, because I JUST discovered that Costco closed up their printer ink refill AND photo services in February. This just days after my yellow HP 952 cartridge tapped out. I've searched the internets and cannot find retail brick and mortar that refills ink cartridges. I see online refill kits and remanufactured cartridges, but I'm struggling to follow that path after golden service from Costco all these years. Has anybody found good alternatives to this lost service? Your help is very much appreciated in advance.

My stepson use to refill ink cartridges at Walgreens when he was working the photo counter. I think they still do that. Personally, I got tired of the expense and the dried out cartridges so I went with an all-in-one laser printer/scanner/copier. I don't need color printing but if I did I'd probably get a color laser when they go on sale at Costco.

I found out yesterday when I went to Costco and brought my printer ink cartridges that they no longer provide this service. Costco has abandoned all of their in-store photo center services and the printer ink refill was attached to this.
Is there anywhere in the city that offers this service? New printer ink cartridges are criminally expensive and having a refill service saves so much money!

Getting a laser printer will pay for itself in savings. I got a simple black laser printer for $30 on Kijiji, a new toner is about $30 and lasts for years. If I need colour prints (maybe once or twice a year), I bring them on a thumb drive to a print shop.
