Suppose I live in a country where free speech doesn't exist and I decided to bad mouth the govt on a throwaway reddit account, can my post be somehow traced back to my IP, MAC, etc if the Govt forces Reddit to give them the deets? What are the limits to Reddits anonymity (apart from me voluntarily disclosing identifiable information I mean)?

How anonymous? Well, Reddit knows the IP address of every comment you make, and your government, should choose to surveil your online activity, will know what IP address you are using when you are connecting to Reddit. A simple data request could fill in the gaps, if Reddit decided to oblige. So far, Reddit tends to not oblige, but it also seems they hold on to IP addresses anyway whether they need them or not.

The search warrant goes to Reddit. They return IP Address & Email. With the IP Address they send a search warrant to the Internet Service Provider (ISP). They know it is you. With the email, they send a search warrant to the Email Provider. The Email provider might have to return your phone number due to a search Warrant. They might have to provide your emails, if the emails are not encrypted. If they provide your emails, your real First and Last name will be present. With that phone number, they send a search warrant to the Cellular Provider who ran and checked your credit score before offering you a line. Therefore, they have all of your details.

Is Reddit really anonymous for the average user? Was it ever?
I’ve been operating under the assumption that no, it is not truly anon and that if someone wanted to they could link your account to your identity. It’s just more complicated then it would be for Facebook.

You're anon to your family, coworkers etc.. you aren't forced to use real name, profile picture and have your boss and neighbours snooping in your private life. In that way it is a whole lot better than fb. Anon to gov? Probably not.

It's pseudonymous, not anonymous. Once you reveal too much info about your pseudonym (your account), you become identifiable, and all the info reddit has about you can be assigned to your personal identity. So be careful what you post and change your accounts frequently.

All websites collect IP addresses. Whether they use them or not varies, but they all have them. As far as how anonymous Reddit is, it's as anonymous as you make it. If you give people enough information about yourself to figure out who you are, they just might. Otherwise, they won't. No personal information Reddit collects about you is made available to other users.

If you drop enough hints, especially over many, many comments, someone dedicated may be able to dox you. This is why some people delete their account and start over every so often. Many people change unimportant details about themselves like marital status, how many kids they have, job, etc. when it doesn't have any direct impact on the thing being discussed, other people are just vague about it.
