Hi all, a quick question. My university offers Sophos home premium for free. I usually don't do lots of risky stuff. Is it worth it to set it up? Does it have any side effects on my computer like slowing it down?

Sophos is pretty great. If you have an option to get it for free, I would go for it.

Excellent malware protection. It is regarded as one of the heavier antivirus loads, but that's often subjective. Sophos own Hitman Pro, whose signature database is exceptional. Confirm you'd be installing it as the sole central user. Sophos Home Premium permits up to 10 devices, to be centrally controlled, so confirm your computer wouldn't be a 'client' of the University, but with full control, and the ability to install and remove it, as you wished.

Sophos’s anti-malware engine detected 97% of the malware samples I downloaded to my computer prior to installing the program. When I tried to launch each malware program one by one, Sophos’s real-time protection blocked 100% of the samples — making it one of the most effective anti-malware engines I’ve tested.
On the other hand, I wasn’t very impressed with its web protections. During my tests, Sophos only blocked about half of phishing sites. It did better than Chrome on its own, though.

Yes, if you're looking for a paid AV, Sophos Premium is a great option. It's basically their enterprise-level security but put into a home package, and it's pretty underrated in my opinion.

Terrible bloatware Antivirus. Do not download if you are running windows. Crashed my machine running Windows 10 into the blue screen, system repair loop. Could not even start my computer. When I finally accessed windows by disabling the restart loop, had to restart by disabling antimalware (Option 8). When I tried to uninstall it, the uninstall failed. Had to edit the registry to get rid of the darn thing.

So it appears that the non-premium version of Sophos Home has been silently moved from "Free Edition" to "Free Trial". The dashboard is no longer functional and after updating the software it appears essentially bricked with nothing but an ad for premium.
Feels like the beginning of the end for Sophos. I understand sometimes a company will discontinue a product, but to pull the rug out from under me is unhelpful to say the least, especially on a security focused product.
I am very disappointed. I had previously considered upgrading to premium, but I do not consider Sophos an option anymore. I do not feel comfortable trusting my security to a company who will brick my AV with no advance warning.
No blog post or announcement in sight - in fact most of the website still says "Free" but the landing pages have been changed to "Free Trial".
Wondering if others are running into the same issues. Discussion is welcome.
