User Pumbaa80's answer is great if you have an object you want pretty printed. If you're starting from a valid JSON string that you want to pretty printed, you need to convert it to an object first:
var jsonString = '{"some":"json"}';
var jsonPretty = JSON.stringify(JSON.parse(jsonString),null,2);
This builds a JSON object from the string, and then converts it back to a string using JSON stringify's pretty print.
TIL that JSON.stringify() will indent JSON for you! I used it to make a little JSON formatter, since the available ones have too many bells and whistles. Great project for beginners!
This is a cool little example. For anyone who doesn't know how to do this, the third argument in JSON.stringify is an option for how you want the parsed json to be indented (generally an integer denoting spaces or a string denoting the spaces). By default, it is not indented. What I normally do is:
JSON.stringify(json, null, 2);
What u/robertgfthomas did is a tiny bit more complicated, where he allows you to set the indent level based on the top-most text area, with "\t" (the tab character) - as a default:
textOut = JSON.stringify(JSON.parse(textIn), null, (indentLevel || '\t'));
And yes, I know this is basic stuff, but hopefully this will help someone become one of today's Lucky Ten Thousand.
