Who is you least favorite historical character and why? (This is all fun and people’s opinions)
I feel like I may get the side eye from some folks but I absolutely can’t stand Kit or Courtney. Kit’s doll is just really not my favorite. I hated her when I was young first getting into AG and nothing has changed 13 years later. I’m also not a fan of either of her meet outfits, but I do think the other outfits in her collection are really cute. Especially the pre-Beforever era outfits and accessories. Courtney is just incredibly boring to me and she looks too similar to Maryellen IMO. I’m not the biggest fan of any of her outfits aside from the cardigan from her mix and match collection and her pj sets. Give her freckles, a new eyebrow shape, literally anything additional to make her slightly more unique. The 80’s fashion trends just aren’t my fav so I think that’s where a lot of my issues with her come from too. But again, these are all just my opinions and not a personal attack on anyone who may love these dolls! If I had to pick favorites though, I actually really love Julie, Nanea, Caroline, and Marie Grace + Cecile. Julie’s collection is so colorful and cool without being too chaotic like Courtney’s. I will admit I didn’t never connect with her books though. I love her outfits, her original bed, the egg chair, her turquoise car, I think she’s just really fun! Plus I love her silky long hair. I desperately miss the “Best Friends” line with the dolls and I always loved Ivy too. Nanea is a winner for me because I think her face mold is just so endearing and beautiful. She’s a really sweet looking doll. I wish they had an extra outfit or 2 for her collection though. I know a lot of people either love or hate Caroline, and I happen to adore her. It’s those eyes and those ringlet curls! I think she looks angelic and I genuinely wish they never retired her. Her outfits were also so intricate and beautiful with all the different fabrics used, the patterns and colors, I just think she’s gorgeous. Marie Grace is a big winner for me because I love her face mold a lot. It’s really unique and the only true v-shaped face mold from AG. Her pin curls are adorable too. I wasn’t ever a huge fan of the outfits in her collection though. Cecile is overall just so stunning to me. I love her hair, the eye color, and the Sonali mold in general is just super cute to me. Despite not liking Marie Graces outfits that much, I did always love Cecile’s! Cecile’s play set with the bird cage was something I always wanted growing up. More on reddit.com

Did the first Julie dolls have 2 different stamps?
There are lots of dolls who could have either "American Girl" or "Pleasant Company" face molds, because they used the Pleasant Company ones until they wore out. Both would have been in use on the Josefina face mold when Julie came out. More on reddit.com

I’m buying a Christmas gift for a friend and know nothing about American Girl. I saw this listing for a Julie (his favorite) but the seller wasn’t sure the year or any info. So I’m asking y’all! Could you give me any info? Is it a good doll? Thanks!

If you're looking for a secondhand doll to gift to someone, you'll likely want to look for a doll that has minimal to no markings on the face, body and limbs, and whose hair is not a complete wreck (tangled can be brushed out with a wire brush but sometimes dry or knotted hair can be harder to fix). You'll want eyes that open and close well and aren't lopsided from broken pegs inside. It's hard to tell much about this doll from one clothed picture but she might be in decent shape.

Julie Albright would have to be my least historical character mainly due to the fact she is from the 1970s. As well her story just felt sad to me with her family situation and all that. Also that Julie is into sports and I don’t care for sports generally speaking. The only thing about the 70s I like from America would have to be the music but that’s about it. Again all my opinion.

Nanea. Her doll is beautiful, that's not the problem - her books (the one that i've read at least), is the problem. On the one hand, i get that the franchise is called American Girl - they tell American stories. But it's still kinda gross and weird to tell a story of a half-Hawaiian girl during WW2 and not have her question her patriotism at all. Having her sing Aloha 'Oe to tourists knowing the cultural and historical significance of that song, and then the ending where she's hula dancing for American soldiers and it's supposed to be celebratory? It felt gross to me. Granted, i'm not Native Hawaiian, so if anyone who is ever wants to correct me or give their insight, i'd greatly appreciate it. But from what little i do know, it feels very gross to essentially lampshade the colonization of Hawaii. It's actually really bizarre that a Disney movie made 15 years prior to Nanea's release actually tackled the subject WAY better. Lilo & Stitch addressed almost directly how the US government has treated and currently does treat Hawaii, as well as how native culture itself and the people are treated like a tourist attraction. There's a scene that almost made it into the film that directly shows Lilo facing racism from tourists (apologies for the poor quality, it's the best i could find on short notice). The more subtle things that did make it into the film include Nani saying that the luau she works at is "fake" - which most luaus for tourists are (comedian Gabriel Iglesias actually has a really funny bit about how you can tell when you're going to a real luau vs a fake one). The most heartbreaking one though is when she thinks she's going to lose Lilo to CPS, and sings her Aloha 'Oe. This is even more emotional when you realize that Aloha 'Oe was sung by Queen Lili'uokalani, the last queen of Hawaii, as a last goodbye to her people when she had to give up her country to the US government. Compare that heartbreaking moment, to when Nanea sung it to tourists. It's like they just found a bunch of Hawaiian things and then plopped them into the story without thinking just to add to the aesthetic. American Girl was so afraid of pissing off patriotic white moms that it didn't address the elephant in the room: that Hawaii never wanted to be a part of America. They tried to walk that tightrope, by making her half-white, but they just weren't bold enough to bother having her questiom her patriotism. Even if Nanea chose to be patriotic in the end, having her feel conflicted about where her loyalty lies would have both fixed a lot of the problems with that book, as well as made Nanea herself more interesting as a character. Because outside of the elephant in the room, the book itself has surprisingly low stakes considering the circumstances, and the characterization is rather boring. Nanea's tired of feeling like the baby of the family and wants to win some contest. Despite the fact that her hometown was attacked and the government threatened to send her friend's dad to a camp, the stakes feel low because nothing bad actually happens. Nobody is injured, the friend's dad is let go because it was a case of mistaken identity, and her lost dog was found totally unharmed. I wasn't expecting it to go full on Animorphs or anything, but it just felt like they were pulling the punches. Pearl Harbor was a horrific tragedy. And yet by the end of the story it feels like everything's all hunky-dory, which it very much wasn't. Nanea's story has less stakes than Kira's - which, no offense to Kira, but it just feels wrong for a GOTY to have a better story than a historical character. Sorry for the long rant, I just feel as though this was one of AG's biggest missteps, and it hardly gets addressed.

I’m going to have to say the twins. I just don’t think enough time has passed to justify their existence. I also think picking the tail end of the decade was a poor choice.

r/americangirl on Reddit: Did the first Julie dolls have 2 different stamps?
May 28, 2023 -

I bought 2 first edition Julies on eBay in their boxes and such. They were made 6 months apart but have different neck stamps and look different too.

The first Julie has an inside body tag with a manufacturing date of May 2007, which predates her release in September 2007, and she is stamped AG. Her face seems chubbier and has fuller lips and more rounded cheeks. Her body is stuffed really full and has a big booty.

The second has a manufacturing date of November 2007 but is stamped PC, even after her release. The weird part is that her body is much skinnier and while her face looks similar, I swear it is slightly narrower and more angled. Like her chin seems more pointed and her eyes seem smaller and closer together when compared with the other one. These types of changes coincide with the Mattel versions slimming down but why the PC stamp? Wouldn’t you think she’d be more likely to have the AG stamp at that point and the fuller faced pre-release version would have the PC stamp, as she looks more closely related to the older dolls?

Maybe different factories were using different molds. It just seems strange that they already had a fuller faced Julie that was stamped AG, which was already put out 6 months earlier but then changed the face to be narrower and stamped it PC.

Of course, the AG Julie could’ve had a head swap on an old body. I thought maybe they were all stamped PC and perhaps she just got a new head later that said AG. But that still doesn’t explain the nice full face with round cheeks and classic look. Unless they went back to that at some point?

Has anyone else seen different versions of first year Julie?
