I recently was in touch with Keychron support, and they pointed me at https://launcher.keychron.com to configure my keyboard. This was new to me and I don't see it mentioned in this sub's history so thought I'd post it.

There is a short story : "It’s new. They were talking about it on the Discord channel , because they’ll be using that for their new keyboards, because it’s been difficult to get their layouts approved into Via in a timely manner."

I'm considering getting a K2 HE and I have some questions regarding the software.

Can I create combos using the Launcher? This is important to me as I use a number of them -- to many to replace using layers.
Am I really limited to only two layers per OS? I can understand that the default configuration only needs two layers but once I want to add my own that is simply not enough.
Can I flash the board with my own version of QMK? This would basically fix the other problems as I can just update everything as I like.
If the K2 HE can't support these requirements, is there another Keychron 60-75% board that can?

No, but you can in QMK. No. Just keep the keyboard in Mac mode and rebind all the layers to whatever you want. Yes. Source code here under the hall_effect_playground branch. Any QMK one. Idk how combos and the HE features will interact, however, like setting keys to be multiple keys depending on how far you press it.

For example, I have added two extra layers, for a total of six layers. At least Via supports the extra layers; I don't know about the clone (it does in general, but may there is something HE -specific?).

I’ve been using the Keychron K2 HE for a few months now and wanted to share some thoughts on it, especially since it’s one of the more unique boards out there with magnetic Hall Effect switches, adjustable actuation, and pressure sensitivity (even if nothing really takes advantage of that yet).

As someone who cares a lot about design and function, this board really caught my eye. I ended up making a short video review breaking down the build quality, typing feel, the Keychron Launcher software, and whether the magnetic switches actually make a difference in daily use.

Nice vid! Good review. I personally still don't really understand who HE is really intended for. I get how, at least in theory, the pressure sensitivity can be used in games. But if you're not a gamer at all (I am not) is there much benefit for people who just need a good typing experience?

I just recieved mine in the mail today, and honestly haven't done anything to unlock its potential. All I've done is type and play a few FPS games to see if I like how it feels. What else could I be doing?/What else should I be doing? to improve my experience.

I'm attempting to update keyboard firmware as the launcher says but device with "boot rom open" won't show up. I'm pressing ESC while connecting the cable and keyboard goes unresponsive (as it should)?

You can positively verify flash mode (AKA firmware update mode AKA bootloader mode AKA DFU mode). It also works on Windows (but see the prerequisites below (at least #1 and #2)). Prerequisites on Windows It is required to install some drivers to flash/update the keyboard firmware. For example, use QMK Toolbox ( this Keychron page has some details on the driver installation (near "Run as administrator")). Prime suspect #1: The notorious Thrustmaster AKA Guillemot driver is not interfering (if it happens to be installed). If it is installed, it may or may not be possible to disable without uninstalling it. Prime suspect #2: SignalRGB is not active. It is allegedly possible to disable it for the current Windows session, without the need to uninstall it. Though it may not affect flashing from the command line (see below), only the configuration tools. If all else fails, do it from the command line (even if not) In a pinch, it is also possible from Linux booted off a live USB stick , say, LMDE (though dfu-util would have to be installed for every session, for example, sudo apt install dfu-util from the command line). BIOS configuration changes may or may not be required for that to work (or at least entering it to select the boot device). Flash from the command-line (with the keyboard in flash mode ): dfu-util -l # Verify bootloader mode dfu-util -a 0 --dfuse-address 0x08000000:leave -D my_awesome_Keychron_K2_HE_iso_encoder_keyboard_firmware.bin It also works on Windows (if the drivers are installed—see #1 above. How is the software I’m debating doing my first custom keyboard and software a big thing for me

Launcher is a fork of VIA. VIA is best in class for keyboard configuration software. https://www.caniusevia.com/

QMK is the best for programming your keyboard to do literally anything. The only caveat is you need to be able to write C code. Keychron provides source code for all their QMK boards (eventually), so you can take advantage of that. VIA provides a decent UI for simple remapping, but it obviously can't be as flexible as programming the source code to do whatever you want. The biggest advantage gamer brand software has over VIA is easy RGB customization, but VIA (and QMK) blow them all out of the water in literally everything else.
