January 29, 2021 -

For quite a while I was looking to replace my modded womier k66 as a daily driver keyboard.
All and all I like muted, yet firm feeling of acrylic/polycarbonate chassis, so I went ahead and ordered V1. My previous attempt at replacing daily driver was GMMK pro with lubed and filmed gateron mochi, but I was very underwhelmed by both quality, gasket performance and also some ergonomic decisions, so I stayed with k66.

My preference are heavier linear switches, and I wanted to try Gateron CJ’s for a while. Short switches impression: yes, they are as smooth out of the box as people tell. They are smoother and have less wobble than gateron blacks, tiny bit lighter, but it is hard to notice. Similar to inks as well. Overall I am extremely happy with CJ’s.

Back to keychron V1
Points that I couldn’t find or didn’t research about V1 before getting it(CAPS part is just so people can find it while googling):

  1. KEYCHRON V1 IMPRESSIONS : This keyboard really does not need any mods to feel and sound good out of the box. It sounds muted because it is packed with foam/silicone and if you want a bit more hollow sound to board – you could remove silicone dampener.

  2. KEYCHRON V1 STABILIZERS : Stabilizers are lubed and tuned very well out of the box. This was first time in my life when I really did not have to do ANYTHING with stabilizers. They are screw in, they really are pretty good. No rattle, just clean stabs.

  3. Bottom out is not as firm as I anticipated.

  4. KEYCHRON V1 LATENCY : As primarily FPS player(Apex, Quake etc.) I did not notice anything worth mentioning regarding latency. It performs within a margin, which is about what to expect from mechanical board. It is not a concern.

  5. KEYCHRON V1 USB CABLE : Stock USB cable that came in the box did not work for me. Keyboard just wouldn’t be detected as keyboard by PC. Tried on several systems.

  6. KEYCHRON V1 KNOB : Knob has very pronounced steps and feels very sturdy, just as keyboard itself. Has stiffer operation than one on glorious products.

  7. KEYCHRON V1 VIA doesn’t detect : As of now – VIA does not detect keyboard straight away, so you need to do the drag-drop .json thing to remap it. Should be fixed ones github updates go through

  8. KEYCHRON V1 BUILD QUALITY : Build quality is great. I really have nothing bad to say about it. No squeaks. Feels extremely solid for a plastic board.

I am extremely happy with purchase and definitely would recommend it to anyone who does not want to blow whole lot of money on keyboard and at the same time doesn’t want to deal with all the issues that come with purchasing epomaker/skyloong/womier/glorious or any other 70-120$ keyboard. Yes it does not have gasket mount, but in my eyes good quality tray mount is way better than crappy gasket mount(like gmmk pro for example).

There seem to not be enough information about it around still, so feel free to ask questions about it. I will try to answer everything within a day or so.

If you’re purchasing the Keychron V1 directly from the retailer’s website, you’ll be able to customize the board to your liking. r/Keychron on Reddit: What’s the point of the bare bones option?
May 23, 2023 -

Maybe im missing something here but for only a $20 USD you can order a board without keycaps and switches.

Is that the only difference? How is this a better option? Even if I was planning on changing out the keycaps and switches. Where would I ever be able to find a good full set of key caps and switches for $20?

I might as well just fork out that extra 20 just so i have some extra pieces.

Like i get the marketing behind it. But it seems to me such an obvious waste of a choice like why bother even offering it?

r/Keychron on Reddit: Opinions on the V3?
April 20, 2023 -

I have no idea what I’m doing, but I read a New York Times article about this being a great keyboard. Became interested because my friend has a K3. I have no idea what the differences are between the K’s, the V’s, and the Q’s. I’ll be using this purely for typing. Any opinions and help are greatly appreciated!

IMO the V series models are great entry points into mechanical keyboards. I'm biased as I started the custom keyboard journey with a V1 not all that long ago. For the price, especially in bare bones, the V1 is a great learning keyboard. I took it entirely apart, changed out stabs, added PE foam, tape mod, super dense case dampening and had a blast customizing it with VIA. All V series keyboards, to my knowledge, offer hotswap PCBs and are wired only. The K (non-Pro) series is more turn-key, in my opinion, though that doesn't mean they can't be modded. Some of them feature soldered switches so the boards don't have hot-swap sockets. The non-Pro K series cannot be customized using QMK/VIA. They also come in both regular and low profile form factors. I have a low profile NuPhy keyboard that is awesome, but only if you like low profile keyboards. In lieu of flexibility over the V series, the K series includes wireless options but can be used wired only. As someone who wants to mess with my keyboard I feel the V series is more appropriate for me. After having my fun with the V1 I purchased the Q1 Pro, same layout and customizability but with an aluminum case, wireless connectivity, high customizability and targeting the keyboard enthusiast. With modding the V1 under my belt I had no issues taking apart a $200 keyboard and modding it as well. If you want a wireless keyboard, the K and K-Pro series can meet that. If you want greater customizability, then I recommend the V series. In barebones form and with QMK/VIA support, the price is really hard to beat. But get an assembled version if you don't want to initially mess with switches and keycaps. Just read up on the different switch options before pulling the trigger. And note that you can mod it for sound and feel after you are comfortable with it.

I was in a similar situation last week. After doing some research to replace my current Logitech G513, I ended up considering the K8 pro and the V3 and I purchased the V3. On paper, there does not seem to be much (or any?) difference in build quality, so it comes down to features. The main feature of the K8 pro is the dual wired/wireless connection option. The main benefit of the V3 is the option to get a knob. To me , the wireless option of the K8 pro was not particularly attractive, especially after reading some reviews that reported some issues with the bluetooth connection on this keyboard. On the other hand, coming from a keyboard that lacked dedicated multimedia keys, I was very interested in the programmable knob present on the V3. I purchased the V3 (knob version) from Amazon in "like-new condition" and got a great price for a product that looks new. Received it yesterday and I'm very happy with it. The brown switches are a nice upgrade relative to my previous Logi keyboard. The typing experience is really great, and the build quality seems way better than my previous keyboard. I only tested a few customization options on the VIA interface and everything looks great. I also find the knob to be a great feature. After using it, it will be difficult to switch back to a keyboard without it.
