I have a 10 year old who gets weekly allowance. Both he and I agree cash is a pain in the butt. I never have it on hand to pay him and he doesn't like having all the physical bills. He asked if he could have a debit card after seeing an ad for Greenlight. We looked into this but seen there is a minimum $6/mo fee just to have the card. Are there other free options where it wont matter if the balance goes to $0? I thought about getting him a reloadable VISA gift card but not sure how that works long term either.

Explore your local financial institutions. (ie Banks/Credit unions) They often have children accounts that you link to yours or some variation of such things. Not all offer the same stuff so explore your local market. Alternatively, depending on how trustworthy you feel the child is, you can add your child as an AU on your credit card. Square up the balances after charges are made later.

I'd look at starting them with their own bank account with you as the other person on it. even if it's not a "youth" account, you're never too young to start learning about money. do you pay allowance every week? that's the time to sit with them and look at their accounts to make sure they know how much they have.
