When I play FIFA on my Surface Studio Laptop, it gets incredibly hot and affects the performance of my laptop. I've dumbed down a lot of the graphics settings but my laptop still gets really hot. I'm looking for an external fan that is relatively quiet and is good quality.

The Flydigi BS2 / BS2 Pro is a bit chunky in size, but it offers the best performance and noise control compared to other coolers. I had been using the Flydigi BS1 for a few months, and it brought my CPU temperatures down from around 100°C to about 85°C. After upgrading to the Flydigi BS2 Pro, I’ve managed to lower the temps further to around 80 °C at 3300 RPM and to around 75°C at its maximum setting of 4000 RPM. It’s loud at that speed, but still relatively quieter than other brands like Llano and IETS.

So I want to buy this laptop stand but it doesn't come with a fan. Currently, my laptop needs a cooling pad so it doesn't overheat when running games. If I put a fan in this configuration will it have the same cooling effect like a conventional cooling pad?

A fan there would not change anything. Active cooling pads that you typically see do not really do anything at all. The idea is to get 'cooler' air into the laptop right? Not 'more air'. The fans can only spin so fast, and if you push more air into them, you end up with almost a vacuum wall and will possibly have worse temps. The IETS version, or whatever the $70 jet engine thing is, creates a 'vapor chamber' under the fans so they can intake 'cooler air' and that is about the best you will get from a cooling pad type aspect. Also note, that thing gets loud. If you 'need' a cooling pad to preventing 'overheating' (thermal throttling), then you have an issue that needs to be dealt with inside the machine. Settings, dirt and dust, power profiles etc.

I know this is an old thread but this might help others. As long as your laptop is has a bottom intake and side/rear exhaust then yes fans directly under will help tremendously. This is what I did. I used a metal height adjustable laptop stand that has a mesh platform then I mounted 2 x 120mm quiet Noctua fans under the mesh directly under the intake. You can get an amplified cable USB split to 2 x 4 pin fan connector and plug it right to the laptop so it will run at max speed, all from Amazon. For me it dropped CPU/GPU and the motherboard temps by nearly 20c at full load.

I made a mistake of ordering this beefy Asus StudioBook laptop with an Intel CPU with a bunch of RAM and a large NVMe drive, thinking that it would be nice to have a powerful laptop while traveling.

Unfortunately what I didn’t expect is that that laptop can also act as a space heater. Which becomes a real issue in a warmer climate.

So I was wondering if you guys use any external fans for your laptop that you can recommend? Something that doesn’t make you feel like you’re sitting in a wind tunnel.

I'd point out that the heat goes somewhere, so a fan would turn your space heater into a room heater. Even the fan itself generates some heat. So if your goal is a cooler room, you can look at reducing heat generation. I get by without any extra fans by using a portable stand that gets my laptop off the table and some modest undervolts on the cpu/gpu. I dropped idle temps around ten degrees C without any noticeable performance impact.

I have an Alienware laptop with 64GB RAM and two SSDs that can run hot under high loads. In addition to a collapsible stand, I have a small USB box fan placed underneath it to improve air flow and reduce noise from the built-in fans. I also use the SpeedFan utility (Almico) to keep an eye on component temperatures. At least once a month, I will use an air blower or a hand vac to remove dust from the vents. A few times a year, I will unscrew the bottom panel to clean the fans and remove dust.
