Oh gosh, I just declined a job interview from what I thought was a legitimate marketing firm. Their ad was really vague and initially I was ecstatic to get an interview. But after looking at Glassdoor I found it the job was door to door sales. In fact, all positions they listed included sales. An account manager doing sales?? Yeah no thanks.

Any company worth their salt wants to see marketing efforts correlated to common business metrics. You need to have a strong backbone in analytics for just about every modern marketing discipline. Also, understand that conventional Mad Men style content and advertising marketing is becoming more and more rare. Moreover, having an understanding of operations and supply chain is becoming more and more relevant as the discussion around marketing isn't "how do we convince someone to buy this" as it is "how to do we get this in the faces of people who actually care, and how do we make it as easy as possible for them to purchase and receive it". Efficiency and convenience are the biggest names in selling right now (Thanks, Amazon). That means data-driven segmentation and content strategies built around strong CRM. That's the shit you want to get acquainted with if you really want to make an impact post-grad. Let's quickly dispel the job search myths though. What are hiring managers looking for? The candidate that best fits their position. If you are that, you will be hired. There's no one answer here. The more you try and game it, the more likely you are to be in a position where you're a mismatch for the position and company culture. Use that internship to get a job in an industry you like. It doesn't even need to be a marketing job, just a business related position for a service or industry that interests you. When you're there learn everything you can about that industry, then take that when you apply and bring it to the table. You're going to have to look far, and make compromises, but the job search is about fitting a puzzle piece. Have your fundamentals down, but don't stress over buzz-words or specific skills.
