Scottish knitwear makers like colhays, drakes, Begg, Lockie. The knits are fairly expensive but you don't need too many. 100% wool or other natural fibres. Soft but kinda robust feeling. I'd say auralee for more fashion forward relaxed knitwear Repro brand like warehouse, real McCoy's make things very tough like they used to but the styling is quite specific. Spier and Mackay for budget. The quality is just fine. You won't wear a hole through some of the heavier wool pants or a blazer with decent care. Uniqlo is fine too. Someone on r/anticonsumption recommended this sub to me. After being frustrated with clothing I buy that seems to quickly degrade, and just becoming jaded with consumerism in general, it is one of my New Year’s resolutions to only buy high-quality clothing that I can wear for several years. I want to buy some new clothes at this time, but I am hesitant to do so because I am unsure of which brands to avoid for low quality and which would be best for high quality and overall sustainability. The city I live in does not have many options for clothes shopping outside of big box stores and fast fashion retailers, so i plan on shopping online for a wider selection. However, it is nearly impossible to gauge what brands to purchase due to my unfamiliarity with them and inability to physically examine them.
My style is pretty average and somewhat preppy; for reference, some brands I like are Calvin Klein and Banana Republic. I do like to dress more casually sometimes (think sneakers, graphic T-shirt, and denim jacket). I want to buy clothing with natural materials (e.g., cotton, natural leather, etc.) but I do prefer stretch jeans. I would say my budget is in the upper-middle range; for reference, I just bought a pair of leather boots for about $215. I am not opposed to buying thrifted/secondhand/vintage clothing. I would prefer products made in the USA, but it is not a dealbreaker if they are not.

Definitely check out smaller brands like American Trench, Gustin, Naked & Famous, and Kato Brand. Kato makes some incredible stretch denim, but it’s not cheap. Still, your mindset seems to be shifting to buying fewer, better things and prices will increase with higher quality raw materials. Seek out wool over cotton when possible, as it’s far stronger and has many properties which are unique (anti-microbial, flame resistant, moisture wicking). Socks are especially great products to buy in wool form, and my personal favorite is Darn Tough Vermont but Smartwool is great too. For non stretch denim, check out Tellason (their “stock” like is especially affordable) Bravestar, and Gustin. You mentioned boots around the $200 price point which is just entering the lower end of good footwear. Just make sure you get something with decent leather which can be resoled (welted or stitch-down construction). Thursday is a great starting point, but save a bit more for Red Wing or Grant Stone and you likely won’t need another pair for 10 years or more. Above all, look for small brands which don’t have the luxury of name recognition. Sadly, many of the old high quality brands have diminished quality like Filson. Still some good items but you really need to know what to look for. Best of luck on your journey! It’s one absolutely worth taking.

l usually shop at places like Target, Old Navy, Kohl's, but I'm tired of everything looking cheap and misshapen after just a few wears (or even immediately). So I threw out most of my clothes to start over.
I just got a couple shirts and a pair of shorts from ASRV and on first impression, the quality seems much better. The fabric feels more premium and the overall construction feels more solid.
I need more clothes like this. Things that are well made, comfortable, and intentional. Not really looking for name recognition or anything. Just brands that have good t-shirts, shorts, jeans, and the occasional polo. I am a bigger guy (losing weight though), so I need brands that make at least XL, but preferably 2X.
Also I do value brands that are focused on sustainability and ethically sourced materials and labor.

If you are taking cost in into account then Uniqlo is probably the best bang for your buck. Grab a pair of selvedge jeans, pima cotton T shirts, airism underwear and undershirts. Then whatever else you need. Until you are done losing weight I wouldn't spend too much on more expensive versions. After that I would look at the American heritage style brands, particularly from Japan. Iron Heart makes stuff in larger sizes but check the measurement charts carefully since they are a Japanese brand and run a little small. For sweatshirts you can't go wrong with Wonderlooper but it comes at a premium.
