I want to install Microsoft 365 business premium and or Office 365 E3 on a cloud hosted RDS server. According to this Microsoft link , both are supported for shared computer activation with the following caveats.
"What you need to get started
The following is a list of prerequisites that you need to deploy Microsoft 365 Apps or the Project and Visio desktop apps with RDS:
One of the following plans:- A Microsoft 365 (or Office 365) plan that includes Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise.
- A Microsoft 365 Business Premium plan that includes Microsoft 365 Apps for business.
- For the Project and Visio desktop apps, a subscription plan that includes those products. The
Office Deployment Tool, which is available on the Microsoft Download Center.
A separate user account for each user who signs in to the shared computer."
I think I’m getting hung up on the bold section above. I’m assuming Microsoft 365 business premium includes Microsoft 365 apps for business but they are two different products. probably just overthinking this.
From what I’ve researched I need to use the office deployment toolkit with the shared activation option enabled.
I have a few questions.
- Is the office deployment toolkit the only way to do this properly?
- If so, what is the correct version I need to choose from the Office suites, there is no Business premium option? I think I need to choose Microsoft 365 apps for business but as I said above, it’s a different product. See picture below. Per usual microsoft documentation is clear as mud. - It looks like you can just enable shared activation via group policy. Does that mean you can just download the Office 365 and install it normally and enable the shared activation, or is there some special switch you need to use if you just download 365 and install it on a RDS server. This doesn’t seem like the right way but I don’t know.
- If I install Microsoft 365 Apps can an E3 user still use everything they are licensed for?
Thank you in advance.
Yes, the Office Deployment Toolkit is the recommended way to deploy Microsoft 365 Apps or Office 365 on an RDS server. It provides more control over the installation process and allows you to configure various settings.
When using the ODT, you don’t explicitly choose “Microsoft 365 Business Premium” or “Office 365 E3” in the configuration file. Instead, you specify the product in the configuration file using the product ID. For Microsoft 365 Apps for Business, the product ID is “O365BusinessRetail.” For Office 365 ProPlus (which includes the features of E3), the product ID is “O365ProPlusRetail.”
Just make sure you have the correct licensing for the users who are accessing the server. Each user should have a separate user account with O365.
