December 1, 2023 -
So I just moved to Missouri less than a year ago. My car got totaled and I just had to buy a new one. Unaware that there is personal property tax on vehicles of 33.3 % (is what’s listed online) which means my car will cost me an extra like 8-10k a year. Can someone please help me understand this? Am I dumb and misunderstanding how it’s taxed?? Please help I don’t have that much extra money

The 33 1/3 creates the number called assessed value. That number is then plugged into a calculation to create the actual tax bill. Assessed value/100 X Total Tax Rate = Estimated Tax Bill. You have to either know it guess at the total tax rate for your address. Here is an example from St Charles County: To calculate taxes owed on a $100,000 vehicle at a 6.5694 total tax rate per $100 of assessed valuation: 100,000 X .333333 (33 1/3%) = $33,333 33,333 / 100 X 6.5694 = $2,189.58 owed in taxes.

The property tax is not that high. Normally a $35k vehicle would be $900.00 or so annually. But you may have county tax and city tax depending on your address.

Since the property that was owned the prior year is still listed on the computer we can tell at a glance if there are any changes. After all the updates are made and the vehicle value tables have been updated, we then run a program that assigns values to all the vehicles and adds up the other valuation components to determine the final assessed value for each account. Assessment lists and tax books are all computer generated.
