Are mountain Warehouse winter jackets good enough for Toronto winter?
Not sure but as a lifelong Canadian from Northern Canada (-35/-40 winters), this is fine if it's windproof and waterproof and you can wear layers. Layers are key - tshirt or undershirt, long sleeved shirt, sweater, and this jacket. I'd like to believe the tags would be accurate temperatures as well. You can always ask the staff waht they think. I have a coat from Mountain Warehouse and it is waterproof but it wasn't as warm as I was hoping, I had to buy another thinner thermal coat to go underneath. Although to be fair, I get very very cold, much more than a normal person! ... My kids have had the waterproof ones for school trips etc and they have been great. These last long, multiple winters. So it’s an investment Also, use layers instead of relying on just one jacket. Meaning, wear a tshirt, then a shirt, then a fall jacket, and then a winter jacket. Yesterday in Fairview mall I noticed that mountain Warehouse is having sale. I saw some winter jackets, not very thick to my inexperienced hand, but had -30 to -40deg Celsius thermal rating. How come such a light jacket (inexpensive below 150) have that kind of rating? Anyone used those jackets? What is your experience?

They're no where close to as good as the often mixed up brand mountain Hardwear. But they're decent. Not so much referring to warmth but quality and durability I work construction and have a bunch of their thermal layers, which fyi is way more important for keeping warm. I've looked at their jackets etc too but I need hi viz so no bueno. And it's hard to justify spending a lot on clothes I'll be destroying at work. I would highly doubt just the jacket is good at -40 but hey. Proper layering is what matters It also depends what your expectation/use is. Is this for just walking around in the city and you expect to be warm while dealing with the windchill? Or is it for active winter activities and hiking? For reference with their thermals they go on sale for $45 every so often. They're the equivalent of a smartwool 100 thermal or a mec t1 wool base layer. I have the smartwool as well which is way better quality, way warmer and just overall better fit. But there's a huge difference of having 2-3 mountain Warehouse ones for the price of one smartwool.

Looks pretty warm to me, add some layers and that should get you through most Albertan winters. Calgary is generally a bit warmer than Edmonton, but either center can have very cold spells. Most winter days you likely won't need a jacket that warm, at least once you've acclimated to Canada a bit.

I’m from India. Recently shifted here, so I have no idea about how to survive the weather here in Dec/Jan 😕. Can anyone recommend good economical jackets? Alot of people buy the MW jacket for around 70 CAD. Will that work in -20 degrees?

A lot of people worry a lot about jackets/shoes when they first experience a Canadian winter, and that is understandable. If someone has the means, then sure they could go for an expensive jacket. But to be frank, even an Old Navy puffer jacket will do the job, and these often go for up to 70% off. To me it is the base layer that is critical and your first line of defence. Maybe worthwhile having a couple of sets. Thereafter its all about layering up. shirt/long sleeve t, then a hoodie/sweater, and then finally your jacket. That should do the job. Flannel shirts are also great this time of the year. Same advice regarding shoes. One could splash on something very good. But even the likes of Call it Spring have very affordable stuff, which i have been happily using for multiple seasons now. Socks also matter a lot, the likes of Dollarama/Costco/Winners/Marshalls have excellent value for money options.

Can someone please explain how with lower down fill power one jacket has higher warmth level compared to another with higher down fill power? More down. 600 vs 800 isn't a rating of warmth so much as it's a rating of volume. 1 oz of 800 power down fills more space than an ounce of 600 power down. However, if the 600 jacket has more down in it...it'll be warmer (but heavier). There's other facts as well, including baffle design, face materials, etc. But, they don't list have much down is in each jacket, so it's tough to say 100% why the lower fill power jacket is rated as warmer. That said, 'warmth' is also extremely relative. Insulation just keeps your body heat in as much as possible. Everyone is different in regard to how much excess heat they produce, as well as their tolerance for cold. My wife can wear an expedition grade down jacket and still feel cold in 20* weather, whereas I don't even really start cracking out my midweight down hoody until then...and even then I'll probably keep it unzipped because otherwise I'll overheat. Throw in some weather variables (relative humidity, wind, etc) and comparing two jackets is going to be tough without really trying them out yourself.

Honestly the one with the LOWER fill power looks warmer. The first, higher fill one mentions an "extreme" rating that apparently includes 'waterproof and breathable'... though from the pics, that does NOT look like a waterproof shell. DWR, sure. Not familiar with this brand but I'd doubt that's waterPROOF. Fill power.. 600 vs 700... is a measure of the QUALITY of the feathers... There's not much difference between 600 and 700. If you're looking at 550 vs 1000, now we're talking different. And often high fill power jackets are going to assume you're moving, hiking, climbing, and generating heat. It's a performance item. A thin 900 fill is gonna be chilly when you're just sitting around... Fill power matters more to folks who are (back)packing... for whom weight and compression are paramount. If that's not you... thicker jackets are warmer than thinner jackets. Ignore the ratings.
