Pretty sure the risk comes from hot stones becoming suddenly wet. They explode from the rapid change in temperature. Just like if you took a glass baking tray out of a hot oven and threw it in the sink full of water. If the stones are wet and you turn on the fire then the water will heat up and evaporate as the rocks heat up. No boom. More on reddit.com

So as the title states I'm doing research for a natural gas fire pit. I have a gas line for my pool heater near where I want to build the fire pit so I planned on extending this for the fire pit (my BIL is a plumber so he would help with gas piping). After looking into it, it seems way more expensive to build my own with landscape blocks, purchase a burner table, burner controls, burner than to just by one already assembled. Am I going about this wrong?

I’m well over a thousand dollars and this isn’t even including the rocks to fill the pan, material for gas pipe, etc. Anyone have experience with this?

When we moved into our house the previous owners had built a fire pit off to the side of the house. When it cooled off I decided to move it. I grabbed the first brick and it crumbles into dust. I soon realized they used no fire bricks and no pan. When I tried to throw it away the garbage man said they wouldn't take it. I had to throw out a couple bricks at a time for over a year.
