How To Care for Ornamental Grass - This Old House
October 15, 2024 - After several years, some ornamental grasses may become too large for their location or start to die out in the center. This is a sign that it’s time to divide the plant. Dividing helps control the size of the grass and rejuvenates it, as well as creating new plants for other areas of your garden. ... Cut back the grass as described above. Use a sharp spade or ax to divide the root ball into smaller sections. Carefully dig out one or more sections, leaving at least one part in the original location.

Need advice on Ornamental Grass care: Cutting dead grass and general maintenance?
Actually, there is a lot to consider..so let me see how much I can address.. First re: the dead grass.. It is a good idea to cut back dead grass from the previous season, as this encourages new growth and keeps the plant looking tidy. The best time to do this is in late winter or early spring before new growth starts. Cut the grass to about 4-6 inches above the ground, using sharp shears or pruners. You can leave some dead grass for added interest, but make sure to remove any that looks unhealthy or unsightly. For fertilizing you want fertilize ornamental grasses once a year in the spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to weak and floppy growth. Put a string around them about 1 foot off the ground and pull it tight. This will stand them up until winter. You can cut them when you like. These are very hard to kill. My friend burns theirs every year. They still come back. It is a chore cutting them every year and we have tons of it growing. More on reddit.com

Getting rid of ornamental grass that spreads underground?
Glyphosate is likely the only option. There's a few of those ornamental grasses that tenacity would kill, but for the most part you're stuck with non selective. If you keep hitting it, especially soon after they sprout, you'll deplete the rhizomes eventually... If you let it go for too long, the active growth will replenish the rhizomes and create new ones. Fyi, its pretty unusual to see ornamental grasses that spread via long rhizomes. Its very common for them to spread with short rhizomes. In other words, ornamental grasses usually spread no more than a few inches from the plant that produced them. And spreading by seed is a decent possibility as well. More on reddit.com

And I'll leave Carex 'The Beatles' alone. No, Debbie, I don't think they meant for this grass to be mown, more as a free form lawn substitute. It doesn't grow taller than 6"-8" according to 'net sources. I think that has to include what drapes back down because I don't think mine is much taller than 4".

Regular garden soil can compact and harm the roots while potting soil will stay aerated, which will give the roots room to grow well. You can easily remedy this, however, by mixing in some potting soil or organic matter (like compost or peat) into the current soil in your pot. With adequate care, the plants should do fine. There are many ornamental grasses suited to your region.

r/gardening on Reddit: Need advice on Ornamental Grass care: Cutting dead grass and general maintenance?
January 3, 2023 -

Hi fellow garden enthusiasts!

I'm new to ornamental grasses and recently moved into a house with a garden that has a few beautiful varieties of them. While I'm loving the way they add texture and movement to the space, I'm not exactly sure how to properly care for these plants. So, I'm hoping you all can help me out with a few questions:

  1. Cutting Dead Grass: Is it necessary to cut back all the dead grass from the previous season, or can I leave some for added interest? If I do need to cut it, when is the best time to do so, and how much should I remove?

  2. General Maintenance: What's the best way to take care of ornamental grasses throughout the year? Any tips on watering, fertilizing, or pruning to ensure they stay healthy and look their best?

  3. Dividing and Transplanting: If any of the grass clumps have become too large or overcrowded, is it possible to divide and transplant them? If so, what's the best method and time of year to do this?

  4. Any other tips: If you have any additional advice or resources for a newbie ornamental grass enthusiast, I'd greatly appreciate it!

I'm looking forward to learning from all of your expertise and experiences. Thank you in advance for your help and happy gardening!

February 21, 2025 - Fountain grass can grow to reach anywhere from 18 inches to more than three feet tall, making it an ideal height to shade shorter flowers and vegetables in your garden that don't require direct sunlight, says Janice Parker, a landscape architect. "Be careful about mixing ornamental grasses with other shapes and forms of plants, because an excess of linear foliage of any kind will start to detract from a visual balance of your garden," she says.
