Anything that's so old-fashioned that it's unstylish or not useful is outdated. You might love the way an antique car looks, but its outdated safety standards (no seat belts or airbags) make it dangerous to drive on the highway.

r/EnglishLearning on Reddit: Is "dated" outdated? Or is "outdated" dated? Or are they not interchangeable?
June 28, 2022 -
I feel like more and more people tend to use "dated", but I've only recently realized that it was an actual adjective (not a past participle of the verb "date"). I always used "outdated" when referring to things that are no longer relevant, or are useless because they're old. Does "dated" mean the exact same thing or are there slight differences in meaning, context etc?

They are very similar. There is a difference, but I think you could use them interchangeably without confusion. I would describe the difference as: Dated: It's old, but it still applies or has a use/function. "Out of fashion" Outdated: It's old and no longer has a use/function. "Obsolete" The green shag carpeting made the house look dated. (The carpet is no longer in fashion, but it still serves a purpose/is functional.) Computers quickly become outdated as new technology hits the market. (The older computers are no longer functional.)

They're not exactly interchangeable, even though they reference the same thing: age of an item. One is used to show that the style places it as from a particular time period. The other shows that the functionality or style is no longer sufficient or appropriate. Dated: It's easy to see that this item comes from a specific earlier time. Whether it's still relevant is not directly addressed (though it can be implied). Outdated: This item is losing (or has lost) its relevance due to age and newer technologies. It may not outwardly appear to be from a specific era. The carpet in my parents house is really dated. (It looks like it's from the 60s, but it still works). My mother's phone is really outdated. (It's older and lacks the common functions of modern phones).
