r/femalelivingspace on Reddit: Buying duvet/cover, need help with dimensions (oversized vs normal queen)!
November 13, 2022 -
I've always owned a comforter, and I'll be getting a new queen size bed soon and want to switch to a duvet + cover to make washing easier. I saw that there is a normal queen size duvet (92 x 88) as well as an oversized queen duvet at 98 x 98. However, the covers that are in my budget and the color I want are all 90 x 90.
I've read some posts suggesting to buy slightly larger duvets than covers to ensure your duvet cover fills out well, but I'm wondering if having 8-ish extra inches for length and width will be too much. Do y'all have any tips/suggestions/advice for this? I don't know if I need to just look for different covers or if the extra width/length will be fine. Thanks in advance!

I went for oversized; King duvet on a queen mattress and I love it. There's a few benefits for me: More blanket to share with my partner Easier to make the bed. Now both sides of have lots of overhang I love the look, it actually looks like the photos on the duvet packaging. Cozier and a little more boujee? hides the stuff stored under my bed I do not recommend getting it if your bed is pushed into a corner. It'll be way too much bulk with nowhere to put it. Or if you have a super, super low bedframe. Or if your bedframe has a really large shelf all around the outside. The final result depends on what bedframe/box spring combo you have right now. I have a platform bed and no box spring, and my duvet doesn't quite reach the floor. If you have a box spring, it should at least reach down the touch the frame. (Full disclaimer: when I broke up with my ex, I let him keep the oversized duvet because I was moving into an apartment with a loft bed and I bought a regular Queen duvet again. Now that I'm back on a regular platform bed I miss the big blanket so much, but I really splurged on this Queen duvet so I don't want to replace it already) TLDR: girl, do it

Oversized queen, or King duvet insert for queen bed?
Really stumped on this. I’m reading a lot that a queen does best with a king duvet insert, is this true? My frame is 14in and mattress is also 14in I… More on reddit.com

Explain down comforters and duvets like I’m 5?
A down comforter (or silk, or down alternative) goes inside the duvet cover, creating the floofy duvet. If you want an oversized fit for your bed, you could order a king size comforter and a king size duvet cover (I seem to remember that there used to be companies who manufactured and sold oversized queen comforters but I don't know how common/easy to find those are nowadays). If you order a queen sized comforter and put it inside a king sized duvet cover, you're going to have a lot of empty space on the sides and around the actual comforter. The duvet cover has to fit your comforter properly. If you want something that's "middle of the road" for warmth, you want to look for an all season or year round weight, not anything marked extra warmth or specific for winter. Look for something in the 40oz./700-750 fill power range for a queen comforter. More on reddit.com

what’s with bedding sizes? - help choosing
March 21, 2021 - Instead of 8” at the end as in the queen, I now have 12”, still not enough to cover a 15” mattress. On the sides, however, the duvet will hang down 9” past the mattress, which seems way too long. I’m trying to avoid buying the bed option with the footboard because I have a small room, but that would solve the short end. Getting a king and tucking in the comforter would solve the long sides, but that sounds like something I’d quickly grow tired of having todo do every morning and untuck every night.

The 6 Best Comforters of 2025 | Reviews by Wirecutter
October 20, 2025 - At just over 5 pounds for a queen size and just under 6 for a king, the Bavarian is one of the lightest—yet still very warm—comforters we’ve ever tested. It’s made of 100% goose down and has a durable, sewn-through construction. This comforter’s other details are up to snuff too. It features generous oversize dimensions and a long-staple-cotton cambric (plain-weave) shell—one of the softest and quietest we’ve come across.

Answer (1 of 7): It will be a hand’s breadth or so wider and longer, so it will overhang a bit more on the three sides of the mattress (I suppose it could be arranged to overhang the top - but I don’t want my head under the comforter). This can come in handy if you’re a side sleeper instead of a ...

Should I buy a queen comforter for a full bed? - Quora
Answer (1 of 6): It may be a good idea if you like alot of ‘overhang' on the sides or you are not sleeping alone. because In my experience most full size comforters barely cover the sides of the mattress . So if you care the way it looks on the bed or just want extra for sleeping, I would say yes...
