Hi everyone, I received a check from PA Department of Revenue, only a couple of bucks. The memo on top of it says VT: PHPITCHK followed by a bunch of numbers. The amount is a low lower than requested refund. Any idea what it is? TIA.

PHPITCHK is PA Department of Revenue check verification service. Means nothing to you. You are likely receiving a refund from a tax audit (not you, the Dept of Revenue). Or they caught the overpayment in some other way. If they owe a taxpayer $1.00 they send a $1.00 check. That is the law. Congratulations!

I just received a similar check - I'm assuming you deposited your check and nothing bad happened? It's weird to just get a check in the mail with no details as to why - it tickles my 'this is a scam' spidey sense.

Long story short, moved to Pittsburgh from out of state in 2022. TurboTax messed up my tax return for the state, I noticed it once the PA Dept of Revenue sent me a notice. Can I just file an amended return and disregard the notice? The notice is asking for things that are no longer applicable if I amend my return. I have tried calling them for 2 weeks and can’t get anyone. Went online to schedule a call, not a single time is available.

The easiest way to handle this is to speak to someone at the department. However, as you’re not getting anywhere with that, file an amended return. Include a paper copy in response to the notice you received and a letter explaining that you electronically filed an amended return on X date that corrects the deficiencies in the notice. In the explanation section of the PA-40x indicate that you are filing to correct an error described in notice # whatever.
