The drugstore machines have a biometric scan that will ensure that the picture doesn't get rejected. There's additional rules about lighting, eyes open, mouth closed, both ears shown, shoulders included in the frame, etc. Source: worked at a drugstore for years, back when we did them on polaroid. You better make damn sure the app makes the photo fit exactly the way it should because the passport office is extremely strict about the size of the photos. I tried using one of these apps with my kids passport photos and they denied both of them because it was like a millimeter too big. We wound up having to make a whole new appointment and come back after going to Walgreens for photos. More on reddit.com
