Is Pitney Bowes letter tracking still horrible?
Yes and no. It's still bad, but it's consistently and predictably bad. This means I can have pre-written copy and paste responses to all the usual issues. And with the Purchase Protection Program I can add to each reply that if it never shows up (or it's late) Etsy will issue a full refund. This usually calms them down enough that they are willing to wait a couple days, or go through the refund process if necessary. What has been fascinating is that ebay uses the same PB letter tracking system that Etsy uses. And like you said, there are always a couple messages a week on Esty with people confused/angry about what the PB tracking says. But I have never once had an ebay customer reach out with any issues. Are people on Etsy crankier than ebay? Is PB giving ebay the data in a different way than Etsy? It's a puzzle! More on reddit.com

July 28, 2024Etsy order has Pitney Bowes tracking but it says shipped via USPS on the tracking info on Etsy’s website.
Pitney Bowes is not a shipper. They are a postage reseller. Your seller did indeed track it using USPS, by buying a label though Etsy’s shipping system, and since it starts with 003 it must be a letter or “flat” envelope. I’m guessing stickers or something? Seller did this to save up to 70% on the shipping costs vs buying a USPS “parcel” label. You can’t track those on the USPS site, as you’ve already experienced. Only through Your etsy purchase history. I’ve heard it might be traceable on the PB website but it would be exactly the same info. PB “tracking” only happens as the envelope passes through their scanners/sorting machines at USPS facilities. It may be scanned zero, once, or a few times on its journey, depending on whether the hubs it goes through have those machines (USPS had been removing many of them over the past couple years user DeJoy’s leadership). I ship about half my packages as parcel and half as flats, with this same tracking. Though it shouldn’t be slower, evidence tells me that they can be when it’s a letter or flat. By a couple days, nothing major. I do this to keep my costs low for my customers. I’ve never had one of those permanently go missing. And - this is important- Etsy May send you an “hooray, it’s been delivered!” E-mail on the day it is scanned in the USPS hub nearest you. However, it could still take 3 days to arrive after that. So please don’t harass your seller immediately when etsy suggests it’s been delivered but it’s actually still in the mail stream. Give it a couple days. Your seller will be able to see the same info you can, and there’s no USPS support if you want the seller to investigate it’s whereabouts, however, etsy may be able to help if it indeed never arrives. Doesn’t surprise me that you’ve seen no additional scans since 5 days ago. It’s likely it’ll just show up in the next few days and there will be no more scans. The mail person can’t scan those either, which is why it’s not a true “delivery” scan but rather an estimate if PB sees it go through a scanner in your area hub. All in all… don’t worry. January 1, 2019Tracking down a package with Pitney-Bowes number at post office?
I didn't want to be a Karen and get a supervisor involved at the post office, but if the package is in their possession and is being shipped by them, they should be able to tell me something. I'll probably go back again after work. USPS does not offer tracking on letter mail. Effectively, you are asking them to provide a service they do not provide. That is not possible. I'm not up on the exact technical details, but my understanding is that Pitney Bowes is pulling data from automatic sorting machines to give an estimate on where the letter is. It is not fully accurate. And it's not a service USPS offers - Pitney Bowes is independently offering this data and it's effectively being used for a purpose it was never originally intended to be used for. That's why it's unreliable. I wish I had a more precise technical explanation but that is the basics of it. Bottom line, the flats tracking will never be completely accurate or reliable. If you want a package that CAN be tracked through USPS, you have to pay for first class package. The main benefit of using Etsy flats tracking is that it is the same price as a stamp but gives you the benefit of Etsy's seller protection. You can have your buyer open a "not received" case through Etsy and they will cover the refund at no cost to you.
