TLDR: A new upcoming Android 13 update will cripple some Pixel 4a batteries. Not all devices are affected. Pixel 4a 5G devices explicitly listed as unaffected. Google is offering a few "appeasements" to try and fix their mistake.
Appeasement options (choose 1):
Battery Replacement
$50 USD (or local equivalent) payment.
$100 USD (or local equivalent) Google hardware discount code applicable towards the purchase of another Pixel phone on the Google Store (as available).
Personally I've been using Android 13 in beta for the last 3 weeks on my Pixel 4a and it has truly made my phone unusable if I'm not next to a charger. I've been carrying around a large battery bank with me in my pocket just to get through the day.
I honestly thought I must have dropped it or done something to it physically to cause such degradation to the battery. Kinda glad to know that's not the case.
I'm still trying to determine if I want to get the $50 cash or chose the $100 store credit towards a new Pixel. It is interesting to note that at the time of this post the Pixel 4a trade in value is $120. With the store credit and trade in you would get $220 towards a new Pixel.

I'm missing something here. My 4a has been on Android 13 for a long time and I stopped receiving updates about a year ago. And now they are suddenly pushing an update out to 'Improve the stability of the batteries performance', but yet that update can hurt battery life? What are they not telling us? Meanwhile, my battery life after 3 years still gets me thru the day, although I'm not that heavy of a user. So I'm not happy at all about this update which is going to be forced on me...

My phone is eligible, but I already changed the battery (not through Google). Does anybody know if the update just checks imei to cripple the battery, or it has some other way to check the battery itself?

When is the Pixel 4a Battery - Class Action Lawsuit starting on this latest sh!t show. I'm All in. In one day Google basically Bricked my phone. I went from 7 Hrs of screen time to less than 30 Mins. Battery is now heating and I fear it may catch fire at some point. This upgrade is worse than a Virus. Weeks for a find out about a discount code, $50 bucks towards a $$ complex repair or send your device into te ethos and hope it comes back. Can we role back the upgrade?

My battery already bloated and split the phone in half anyway. I utterly hate these non-removable planned timebomb batteries, almost every android device I have (had.. about 12) has done this. Motorola, Samsung, ONN, and my Pixel. Amusingly the shitty Fire tablets are the only ones that havent bloated, but they instead tend to permadeath if they discharge completely and have short warranties. Motorola sent me 2 fresh K40 batteries for free when I DM'd them on twitter, but those bloated after under 2 years as well. At least they can be replaced easily, but of course shells that pop open easy have no IP rating. Non-removable batteries should be outlawed. I miss being able to hotswap a comically oversized 4x capacity brick for a heavy usage day.

I'm absolutely pissed at this update. My phone has become unusable unless plugged in. I get essentially 45 minutes of runtime. My percentage goes down 2 at a time and up 2 at a time. The battery life wasn't anything to write home about before but it was usable for my needs. I was reluctantly looking into an upgrade in the near future, mostly just for a better camera but I've been left in a position of needing to buy a new phone which I cannot afford. If they don't replace my battery for free and/or roll back this update, then I will be looking further into this. This is planned obsolescence at its finest. Was a pixel ride or die until now.
