In my head, it's always tyrannosaurus, triceratops, stegosaurus, apatosaurus, and velociraptor.

My wife says brachiosaurus is a better "definitive sauropod".

I can also see pteranodon replacing velociraptor as the fifth, or deinonychus replacing velociraptor because it's pretty much the animal people are actually thinking of.

What do you think?

Tyrannosaurus- I don’t think it’s a big debate. It’s the Tyrant Lizard King, I doubt there’s a dinosaur fan who doesn’t know it. Velociraptor- 100% due to the Jurassic Park/World franchise. Most folks might not know what a velociraptor actually looks like, but they know the name. Triceratops- this might be my USA centric view, but I think it’s the most popular ceratopsian. Styracosaraus might be popular over seas, but hard to beat the rival of the T-Rex. Stegosaurus- it’s one of the first dinosaurs a kid probably ever sees. I’m betting most people could pick it out among other Dino’s. Brachiosaurus- I mean the name makes the emoji 🦕. Besides when most people think sauropod I think they goto the towering behemoths like this over the long and lanky behemoths like apatosaurus. Honorable mentions: Spinosaurus, Carnotaurus, Pterodactyl/Dimetrodon (excluded for not being Dinos), Ankylosaurus, Allosaurus, and iguanodon.

To explain my methodology to get this first draft of a list, I included every dinosaur with at least 200k search results on google, then added a couple extra dinos that I thought were important enough to be included. This of course is a very flawed system, so I'm hoping this Sub will help me fill in the gaps. The general criteria I'm looking for is dinosaurs that hold some notable historical, biological, or pop culture significance. World record dinos is something I am trying to include as well. I didn't include any dinos like Brontosaurus and Dracorex however as current scientific knowledge suggests that these were actually preexisting species. If I accidentally included any dinos that also fall in that category, let me know.

Here are some dinosaurs I know were much more popular when I was kid but have fallen out of popularity these past few years (not including invalid species).

Megalosaurus- How did this one lose popularity? It's the first dinosaur discovered.
Corythosaurus -Very iconic crest, I don't understand how this fell.
Minmi- Was it because it no longer had the shortest name for a dinosaur?
Chasmosaurus- Was it because of newer, "cooler" Ceratopsians?
Maiasaura- Was it because we now know that most dinosaurs cared for their young?
Ornitholestes- Probably because it didn't have a crest after all
Saltosaurus- Because other Titanosaurs have been discovered with osteoderms?
Hadrosaurus- Was it because people thought crestless hadrosaurs were boring?
Polacanthus- Probably because people thought Ankylosaurus with clubs are cooler

Megalosaurus bucklandii has never been quite as popular as other theropods due to how fragmentary it is. After the species improperly assigned to its genus were cleared out, we were left with a fragmentary theropod with a fairly generic build. Hadrosaurus and Polacanthus suffer for similar reasons, in addition to nodosaurids being unpopular in general. Corythosaurus hasn't appeared in as much media as it used to, probably due to Parasaurolophus continuing to overtake it in popularity. Maiasaura faces a similar thing with Edmontosaurus, and I don't think Chasmosaurus has ever been very popular because Triceratops is so much better-known as "the three-horned one". Ornitholestes is a Generic Small Theropod from a time when dromaeosaurs were poorly-known, and people probably think dromaeosaurs are cooler than that because of the sickle claw. Saltasaurus is small, so when larger titanosaurs were found they quickly overtook it in popularity. Minmi is an Australian dinosaur, which have never been very popular outside of their home country/continent, and as time has passed I've seen fewer and fewer references to the lengths of dinosaur names being noteworthy in general, suggesting that many newer authors don't care about that.

Going off my own experience here, but I feel like I hear much less about Plateosaurus, Edmontonia, Eoraptor, Deltadromeus, Monoclonius, and Hypsilophodon then I did when I was a kid. I agree with most of OP's picks, as well.
