I used to use numpy.arange but had some complications controlling the number of elements it returns, due to floating point errors. So now I use linspace, e.g.:
>>> import numpy
>>> numpy.linspace(0, 10, num=4)

The range function does not handle floats
I am trying to convert something from PHP to Python, but came across a problem since the range function can only step by integers.
I will divide a circle into 16 parts. In PHP I have written:
for ($degrees = 0; $degrees < 360; $degrees += 22.5) {
...I was going to write it like this in Python:
for degrees in range(0, 360, 22.5):
...What is the easiest / nicest way to achieve this?

You wouldn't want the range function to handle floats - you'd get round-off errors, which would lead to unexpected bugs (i.e. occasionally one extra iteration). Always iterate over ints and convert to floats! for i in range(16): degrees = 360 / 16 # etc

A somewhat “hacky” way to accomplish this using range directly is by multiplying start/end/step by a power of 10 so they’re all integers, then dividing by that same power in your loop. Do note that range doesn’t include the right endpoint. e.g. for degrees in range(0,3600,225): print(degrees/10) You could also form the step-size on your own and use range to get a multiple of it. E.g. if I wanted to cut [1,2] into 17 pieces, I could do for multiple in range(18): x = 1+(multiple/17) print(x) or just use numpy.linspace.

Hi, I have a section of code which takes a score from the user, typecasts it into a float value and saves it under the variable name "score". Then I have a line of code which reads:
while score not in range(0, 101):
However, when I input a float, I get an invalid input error message from python. I think it's because I can't use the range() function with floats. Is there a way around this? If anyone knows how to solve this, then your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Yes, range(0, 101) literally gives the integers from 0 to 100. If you want to know if a number is between two values, use a chained comparison: while 0 <= score < 101: Although note you shouldn't get an actual error, just a False. What exact error message did you see?

You got your answer. But it triggered a thought. People in this sub are often asking for suggestions on projects. If this was an operation I thought I might be doing a lot, I might ask myself, "could I implement some object (not called range) that would have this behavior?" So that might make an interesting exercise. You'd probably want to do two things. Define a class, for instance called Interval, such that Interval(start, end) worked as an initializer. And Implement the "in" operator for your class. Is that possible? Why yes it is. You can override most operators to give them your own meaning for your own class. Even if I didn't have huge use for this, I might try it just as a learning exercise for those two things. As you can see in the Stackoverflow link, it's only a couple of lines of code.
