RH is a retailer that sells furniture from a lot of different manufacturers. Sometimes they'll have high quality sofas from NC manufacturers for around the same price you would find them anywhere. And they will also have some overpriced trendy furniture that you could find cheaper in a lot of other places. The best way to buy good quality furniture is to buy based on the manufacturer. Not the retailer. This is sort of obvious, since you are actually interested in the quality of the furniture and not who sells it. This is how we buy most manufactured items; you aren't interested in a "dishwasher from Lowe's"; you are interested in a "Bosch dishwasher" (or whatever) - it doesn't really matter if you buy it at Lowe's or HD or BestBuy. RH and Crate and Barrel and R&B like to obscure the names of manufacturers because they want you to go to RH to look for a sofa; they don't want you to look for Bradington-Young sofas and comparison shop. (They make exceptions for designer/higher end products like their Milo Baughman chairs). More on reddit.com

November 12, 2024Do I buy an RH couch? I’ve looked at nearly every furniture store in Manhattan and RH seems to have the most comfortable, stylish couches. They are also quite expensive and there aren’t many reviews online. The couch I want would have down filling and I’m also worried that it will constantly sag.
I have a leather chesterfield couch from RH, and still love it. Got it 7 years ago, and yes, about 4 years ago I had noticed that the seat cushions had permanent butt divots. Ended up taking the cushions to a reupholster and he refilled then in a foam that was more sturdy. I’m also considering having the couch taken for a good cleaning / restoring by a leather care shop, but that’s because I don’t really do it on my own. More on reddit.com

I'm moving into a large 1 bedroom and own absolutely nothing. I'm trying to furnish it with moderately nice stuff and keep within 10-15k. Anything upholstered I'm buying new and things like coffee tables, media consoles, etc i'm okay with buying second hand (in good condition).
I know about room & board, west elm, c&b but am wondering if those are good brnds to look at or I should look at others? I was going to look at RH but then read a lot of not great stuff

Room & Board has the best quality for the price of the brands you've thrown out. I would look at local furniture stores too. Our bedroom set is solid wood from a smaller regional chain and was a great deal for the quality. And as you mentioned, estate sales and Facebook marketplace have great finds. Our friends have some fantastic furniture from FB marketplace.
