RS-232 - Wikipedia
2 weeks ago - It formally defines signals connecting between a DTE (data terminal equipment) such as a computer terminal or PC, and a DCE (data circuit-terminating equipment or data communication equipment), such as a modem. The standard defines the electrical characteristics and timing of signals, the meaning of signals, and the physical size and pinout of connectors. The current version of the standard is TIA-232-F Interface Between Data Terminal Equipment and Data Circuit-Terminating Equipment Employing Serial Binary Data Interchange, issued in 1997.

r/embedded on Reddit: RS232 serial communication two-way - best practice
December 7, 2024 -

Iโ€™ve got an Arduino setup with a max3232 allowing me to send and receive serial commands between my arduino and old AV equipment I have.

At the moment I send with the arduino and then essentially โ€˜listenโ€™ in a loop for a response. My question is โ€˜what is best practice for doing this?โ€™. I want to maximise the chance of the AV equipment โ€˜seeingโ€™ the command come through, and then want to maximise the chance of my arduino โ€˜hearingโ€™ the response and capturing it.

As I understand it, thereโ€™s no acknowledgements that happen in the communication in either direction, and the arduino canโ€™t listen and speak at the same time. So whatโ€™s the best practice to minimise the chance of the arduino picking up a response?

Thanks!

Understanding the RS-232 Standard
October 25, 2023 - RS-232 defines that asynchronous serial communication is used to exchange data between devices, meaning that information is transmitted one bit at a time without a dedicated clock signal that synchronizes exchange between the communication partners.
