Samantha: An American Girl Holiday
Charming, turn-of-the-century American Girl tale. Read Common Sense Media's Samantha: An American Girl Holiday review, age rating, and parents guide. "Samantha: An American Girl Holiday" beautifully brings to life both New York in the year 1904 and one of the dolls from the American Girl collection. Originally airing on TV, this story is a poignant portrait of a girl trying to make a difference. The obvious class difference between Samantha and her neighbors is handled skillfully in this movie, and Samantha understands how she can make a positive difference in the lives of those less fortunate

r/americangirl on Reddit: Thoughts on Samantha: An American Girl Holiday.
December 20, 2024 -

I just watched Samantha's movie for the first time last night! Unfortunately, I wasn't a very big fan of it. But I think the movie was bad in a very interesting way, and I wanted to talk about it/hear what y'all think of the film

1. "An American Girl Holiday".

This subtitle is, frankly, just ridiculous to me. There's like... 20 minutes of Christmas in this film. And it's during the orphanage heist subplot, so it's not very holly or jolly. And that's fine! But I don't see why they'd advertise this film as a holiday movie, when it just... isn't.

2. Mia Farrow as Grandmary.

I don't know if she was just miscast for this role, or if she just received bad direction... but I really was not impressed. Grandmary had all of her hard edges sanded away for this movie - all of her sternness replaced with indulgence. To me, the whole point of Grandmary as a character is the contrast between her stern oldfashioned ways and her moments of indulgence! She was a real disappointment for me.

3. Cornelia's Arc.

I'm not sure what happened here. First, I think it was a mistake to move Cornelia's introduction from Christmas to the spring. Cornelia's arrival changing Christmas traditions is such a huge part of why Samantha hated her at first, IMO! I guess the film tried to replace this with Cornelia and the wedding ruining her trip to the 1904 World's Fair, but it just didn't hit as right - it's cancelling a future event vs actually changing her life *right now*.

But adaptations need to make changes, so perhaps I'm just quibbling. But even still - no matter the reasons that Samantha starts to hate Cornelia, she needs to have a moment where she grows to like her. And we just don't see that! She gives her moms veil to Cornelia, but she says herself she only did it for Uncle Gard. We don't ever see how or why Samantha starts to change her mind on Cornelia.

4. Removing Nellie From the Factory Speech Arc.

This one is perhaps my most pedantic. So I can totally see if people don't agree with me here. BUT. I don't like the changes they made with the factory speech!

I can see why they made Samantha see the horrors of factory work first-hand. And it was pretty impactful. But I think the plot really works better when it's Samantha being unaware of the world, and Nellie is the one to correct her. I think her original response to the speech is very powerful:

"It's very nice. It's just... well, it's not very true."

First, this shows us Nellie having to navigate the class difference between her and Samantha. Nellie knows that what Samantha is saying is wrong - but she has to approach this matter delicately. Not only out of her friendship and respect for Samantha, but also to respect the class differences between them.

Second, Nellie pointing out that it's "not true" then parallels when Samantha points out that Americans value being truthful, and that it's necessary to tell the truth about factory labor. It's only through Nellie telling the truth that Samantha can find the courage to tell the truth!

Those are my 4 biggest problems in particular, but in general, I just felt the movie to be a bit odd. I wish it was either more faithful OR, ideally, it was a lot LESS faithful. I wish it had taken stronger liberties in order to make one big coherent narrative. Because there is a lot to improve upon in Samantha's books! They had 3 different authors with 3 different visions for the girl - as much as I love her, the series is a bit of a mess.

And the films did make the choice to cut Agnes and Agatha, which I think was an excellent one. I just wish they had made more of these choices. A lot of moments felt like we were only doing them because of the books.

Just so I don't end on all negativity, some things I did enjoy:

  • I felt Samantha, Nellie, Cornelia, and Gard all had wonderful actors - even if I felt they weren't given the best material to work with.

  • The costuming and set design was gorgeous!

... I'm sure there's other things I liked about the film, but I can't really think of them at the moment.

So, that's my yapping on the film. What do you guys think? Do you have a more positive opinion of it then I do?

These are all valid criticisms! but I do really like the movie. I thought they did a clever job of restructuring all the major plot points to fit into one movie, and the pace was good. Also I loved Mia Farrow as Grandmary but that's for selfish reasons 🔥🔥🤙

I saw it for the first time recently, and I thought it was fine for what it was. "What it was", in this case, is of course "a 90-minute commercial created to sell toys to 8-year-olds" with all of the inherent limitations of creating a movie with 10-11-year-old actors, but that's what it was always going to be. I don't think it was particularly good, but I'm also aware that I adored a lot of things as a small child that were, objectively, kind of mediocre - including some of the original American Girl books, honestly - and I think I can allow people younger than me to also love things that are kind of bad. I still teared up a bit over a few moments between Samantha and Nellie despite that. I don't think it'd be entirely fair to judge the movie from my perspective as an adult, because it wasn't made to appeal to me. Additionally, trying to cram an entire AG series - which encompass a year and a half or more - into one movie was always going to be kind of a mess. I am of two minds about the American Girl movies as a concept: a) I refused to watch them on principle when they initially aired, because I felt that they were going to lead to fewer people reading the books and would strip out the historical context* and b) I like that they led to a lot of cool things I liked happening with the doll line, like a Nellie doll existing, and extra outfits for Samantha and Felicity. The Best Friends line was legitimately very cool, and I think it's a shame they haven't structured any of the recent historical characters in that way. *And I do feel I was correct about some of that, but I've also calmed down a little bit in the 20 years since I was 17, even if I'm still a bit annoyed about blonde Elizabeth. People enjoying things in a different way than I do does not actually hurt me, even if I still think they're wrong. I thought giving Samantha more angst was an interesting choice! She seems generally very well-adjusted and popular among her peers in the books, so they went in some interesting directions with her feeling kind of unwanted, or like she's being shuffled from one relative to another. Samantha's books are kind of uneven anyway, because she's the only character who had multiple writers handling her core series, so it's split between three different authors. I thought removing the twins and making Alice (or is her name Agatha in the movie? But she's clearly the same character as Alice) into Cornelia's niece instead of her youngest sister made more sense just based on math. Regarding some of your points: I think you'd be hard-pressed to wring 90 minutes of plot out of Samantha's Surprise OR Changes for Samantha, so I don't care that they called it "An American Girl Holiday" and I think that's kind of a silly complaint. The friend I was watching it with - who didn't grow up with American Girl and only knows it through me - exclaimed "Wow, Grandmary's kind of a bitch!" at one part, so I think that may just be a "your mileage may vary" kind of thing. Kids get upset when a beloved adult thoughtlessly cancels plans they were looking forward to! That's very normal - especially for a kid in Samantha's situation, where you don't get the impression Grandmary spends a lot of "fun" time with her, and she only sees Uncle Gard sometimes. I thought that seemed very reasonable, and that Samantha's feelings toward Cornelia being about not having as much time with her Uncle Gard made sense. Cornelia first appears in Meet Samantha, actually. They didn't move it. It's just in the earlier Susan S. Adler books Samantha reacts differently to Cornelia than she does in Samantha's Surprise, by Maxine Rose Schur. On another note, I do think the Felicity movie is - darkly - very funny, in that they go to Grandfather's Plantation and there's basically nobody around except for Grandfather himself. I have to assume someone circa 2004 was like "Shit, what do we do about the plantation thing?" - especially when they position him as this beloved figure in Felicity's life who offers sage advice but also, canonically, owns a bunch of human beings, which you can't gloss over in film the same way you can in text - and decided to handle this by saving a lot of money by not hiring extras to play any of the enslaved people Grandfather owns in the books. Just Grandfather, alone in his big plantation house.
