Probably not the type of answer you’re looking for but: When I was a kid I worked for a guy who owned a car detailing company for like 20+ years. He had his shopvacs (which were used on a near constant basis) all setup so that there were two canisters. Meaning the hose where you are actually vacuuming stuff up with went back to an empty canister with no shopvac/engine on it, then from there another hose would go out the back, and that one was connected to a canister that DID have your shopvac/engine. So an empty canister in between. He said it extended the life of his vacuums by about x3 since the majority of the materials stayed in that in between canister and it was much easier on the engine and whatnot. More on reddit.com

August 10, 2024Shop vac Recommendations for new homeowner
Rigid, from Depot are pretty good and priced fairly. If you work with dusty stuff frequently, get one with a HEPA filter. If not, one with bags will be easier to deal with (pull out the bag and throw it away). If you will be working with liquids, the bags and filters get all wet and gross. The HP ratings are a complete joke. You cannot get 3.5hp out of a 120v 15 amp circuit; that rating is made as the vacuum is catching on fire. Spend a few extra dollars to get a "quiet" vac, or wear hearing protection. If you're in a basement, you don't need a gigantic dust bin, because you have to carry all that crap back upstairs, and it's heavy. A smaller vac may be your friend if you use it in the basement and dump it elsewhere. More on reddit.com

July 3, 2023Need Help Deciding Between Two Budget Vacuums (Canada)
Let me let you in on a little secret. if it is an electric vacuum that plugs into the wall and runs continuously anything over 2.41HP is a lie and here is why. HP is a measure of power and in electric motors it is calculated by the power of the motor which is measured in watts. Watts = Volts*Amps and here in Canada our wall outlets output 120 Volts(more like 110-115) and our breakers will flip off if more than 15 Amps are being used (unless you are using a high power outlet like the one behind your stove which will allow more current draw). so at most the max power you can get from your wall outlet is 120volts*15amps or 1800 Watts. 745.7 Watts = approx 1 hp so your wall outlet can only create upto 2.41HP. these company's can get away with claiming their vacuum is 4hp because that is what the motor is rated for. but you will never ever ever get that much power from the motor because physics. It is even more of a lie because if the vacuum just used as much power it could they would flip your breaker every time you turn them on so they are current limited to prevent this. I'm looking for a shop vac. Here is what I plan to use it for:
Blow water out of PVC pipes (garden irrigation and pool) in the fall to prevent ice damage.
Vacuum my garage.
Vacuum water spills around the house.
Vacuum the car (sand in the trunk).
I want to see a good warranty. For example I was looking at costco "dewalt" model but apparently DeWalt does not recognize that model and therefore the warranty claim would be difficult. Ridgid says "lifetime warranty against material defects and workmanship" - does that mean they will replace it if a motor blows? Is that material defect, or will they tell me motor is not included in the lifetime warranty?
Similarly, I don't want a model with exotic accessory sizes. I do not know what is considered "standard" size, but I have read reviews in otherwise good products where people complained of non-standard sizes, having issues finding replacements. For my water blowing applications, I could use a garden hose attachment/adapter - are those pretty standard, or does this not exist?
Lastly, how do filters work on shop vacs? Are those washable and reusable? I don't want to buy a new filter every other time I use the vac. Please help.

I've had good luck with my Ridgid shop vac. The higher end shop vacs are probably better but are much pricier - brands like Nilfisk, Metabo, Makita, & Fein.
