I think some white or off white zellige tiles would look fantastic. The interesting texture and the way they throw the light has impact without being too distracting. As a person who spent months agonizing over the tile decision in my kitchen, I completely understand the struggle. My top advice - forget about trendy or not trendy unless you are planning on selling your (gorgeous!) place sometime soon, and instead, focus on what you love. Your color palette is really neutral already. Subway tile has been huge for a long time, but traditional subway tile is falling out of favor fast - it makes people think of flippers, gray floors, etc. I think this is part of why the 4x4 is making such a resurgence, and I think it is going to be around for some time. It doesn't strike me as a flash-in-the-pan trend. I couldn't decide either on your kitchen, so I played with it. Here are the two layouts I like best. Of the two, I think the 4x4 looks best. https://imgur.com/dS236Wt I might do shelves around the cooktop, depending on what you need around the cooking area, and if you can store stuff you frequently use there or if you have a really good hood vent and you don't mind dusting. I wouldn't do the other side of the window because it would get in the way of the cabinet opening. I would, however, consider tiling the side of the peninsula that faces the living room.
