r/marketing on Reddit: The best way to go into strategic marketing
March 15, 2024 -

Hello everyone👋🏼

I would be really grateful to you if you could help me with your personal experience and information, cos I‘m just tired of having no purpose in my life and not knowing what to do

A bit about me so you understand my situation But if you want you can skip to the „Problem“ part

My name is Andrii I‘m 21, initially I’m from Ukraine but now live in Germany because of the war (i could leave Ukraine because of my health state) I’m here without relatives, wouldn’t say that I want to live here and Germany is my country, but I’m grateful to this country. I work as a barista but several hours per week

I was working in the past as a math tutor and pretty enjoyed it, quit IT university after 1 year cos I didn’t like programming as a main focus of work, also was pretty bad university, and have got a little experience in digital marketing like SMM and web. But this is definitely not enough to find a job in marketing sphere

So now I’m at the point where I have got plenty of time and high inner motivation to build a strong career. But the hardest part to understand what I wanna do, cos now I can start literally any career. This is amazing that I have got such opportunity but also really confusing and hard to manage it.

PROBLEM

I definitely wanna do something in marketing My main goal to become strategic marketer, project manager and open my own agency in the future. I think I would love create complex strategy, organise working process, build brand and do more creative stuff, communicate with people etc. that’s where I really wanna be.

But I think that I can’t just enter such positions from the beginning. + I think the best option for me do remote job cos I live in Germany and to find in house job in Germany I need C2 German and degree, cos here everything a bit more conservative. So now I’m thinking about the best way to gain diversity experience to know as much as I can, and at the same time learn deep knowledge in the most important marketing processes.

QUESTION

What would be the best way to enter strategic marketing role?

I will write, based on my research, which I’m already doing for a week😵‍💫 one of the option could be through marketing analytics. There are good aspects and concerns

Good aspects

  • it fits for online position cos this is a bit narrowed field. if we talk about SMM or content making (which is more creative things which so they probably could fit me more), everytime will win a guy who can make job offline. + you usually make a lot of different tasks and don’t gain deep experience in one field, and I think this is disadvantage if you looking for online job. With analytics I have got more chances to find remote job cos it’s more concrete, so i can dive into it deeply, learn a lot myself, and stand out from the others in online field

  • in my imagination, in simple words, there are 2 guys: the first one collects data then presents it, and the other guy is doing something based on these data. At the end I want to be the second guy, but I want to start with doing tasks of the first guy. Because in that case I will know technical side, then became second guy. So I can not only rely on data but understand how and where they come from. So it will help me be more professional in strategic marketing

Concerns

  • coming back to example with two guys. What if in reality I will always be the guy who collect data and others will be doing something with that? Probably I should initially go into strategical marketing? But then the question how?

  • why should I start with analytics and use it as a career step if I have got other purposes and values? I like communicating with people, not passionate with programming and like doing something creative. Yes, I‘m in love with math, analysing, thinking, analysing and thinking again. It couldbe interesting for me working as marketing analyst for 2-3 years (at least I should try) then switch into strategic marketing. But does it worth it to give 2-3 or even more years to that just to enter strategic marketing roles? Probably exists other way and I don’t see them?

But all my thoughts it’s just my research and opinion, I think only you guys may share the real experience and help me

Wow, If you read till this moment I‘m already extremely grateful to you! If you answer I will be more grateful

P. S. If you could a bit more tell about strategic marketing would be also grateful

Have a nice day everyone!

Following with my general view of how marketing used to be, trying to show you the big picture. But this is vey complex, and many parts have been reduced to nothing or are in very bad situation now. Marketing strategy, marketing tactics, and marketing operations. Marketing strategists are the big picture type of marketers, calling the big shots, with big projects, big money, long term projects, huge impact. They are the ones deciding is a company opens a new unit, goes to another country. They are very involved in decisions to sell a company. Key concepts for marketing strategists are STP (Segmentation, Targeting, Position), sustainable competitive advantage, value proposition, and consumer behavior especially things like the purchase funnel. You may want to search for those concepts if you don't know them. With the big picture in mind, marketing strategists need to think about not only marketing, but how marketing is connected other parts of the business (e.g., finance) and the external environment (e.g., competitors, supplies, consumers, investors). Marketing tactics are focused on the doing something similar, but focused on the marketing department. They run the battles, not the war. If the mission is to invade a place, they focus on invading the place. But they don't deal that much with the other aspects outside that. A key concept for marketing tactics is the marketing mix, known as the 4Ps: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. A set of activities that need to work together to get the work done. For example, product to produce an offering that matches the needs of customers, price to be something that the customers afford, place to have the offerings available to the customer, and promotion to communicate with the customer. People working in marketing tactics typically work for one of the 4Ps or part of that. For example, Product Marketers, and Price Analysts. Marketing operations. Operations are focused on execution. During the invasion, they are the ones running, knowing how to use the tools like the guns and the radios. In marketing, they are the ones creating content, posting on social media, paying for the advertisements, getting the contracts signed, etc. They are the ones who actually invade the place. Marketing research, marketing analytics, marketing intelligence. Information is power. During the war or in marketing, there are people providing support with intelligence. There are 3 main divisions for that in marketing. Marketing research is focused on finding answers that nobody knows, especially when that reason is that others don't have information or data. So, they are like scouters, going to the field, observing what is happening, talking to people, maybe acting as spies. They gather their information to answer questions. Primary data is their focus. Marketing analytics are focused on secondary data, existing that. They received data from many different places, like the internal systems, the platforms they use, agents in the field, the competitors, suppliers, channels. Then they analyze that data. With the advancement of technology, often big data with statistics and coding. Marketing intelligence is about using those things constantly, an integral part of the business. Companies like Amazon and Netflix, for example, are constantly using research and analytics, the companies may not even reason to exist without that. This is just a summary. You may find other stakeholders instead of customers. Professionals dealing with things like endomarketing and trade marketing. But it's often useful to use other fields that are very competitive as an analogy for marketing, for example the military and the sports (especially team sports, but even individual sports usually have a team behind that to compete at a high level). You have many types of players, chain of command, etc.

I'm a marketing strategist, but marketing strategy became almost nothing now. There was a post recently about "marketing strategy" being reduced to making proposals to clients, for example. So, I'm old school, a marketer from the time that marketing strategy actually was something relevant. Some of my opinions: You should find a purpose in life first, and then see if being a marketing strategist matches that or not. Life goals come before career goals to me. I started over several times, that's expected in marketing strategy given the diversity of experience involved. 6cities/4states/2 countries, multiple industries, etc. Agencies are typically hired to do the operational work, like creating content, choosing media, posting on social media, etc. There aren't many agencies focused on marketing strategy. If the goal is to have an agency, learning the operational side is very important. Even without a job, I recommend you to crate your blog, social media accounts, create content, learn AI tools. You may also think of being more related to MarCom (marketing communications) than marketing strategy. Strategy is usually the big picture type of people. Like a military strategist is overseeing the whole war, the different forces, the supplies, the vehicles, the money, the logistics, maybe losing a battle to win the war, choosing priorities, defining targets and goals. They don't really fight the war, they are the ones commanding the war. So, they should have a good knowledge about those different elements involved. Officially speaking, I entered strategic marketing because of my background in finance mostly. But it's hard to say because I also had experience with multiple thins like electronics, comic book writing, and social media. Multiple experiences are important in marketing strategy. So, there is no best way to enter, we enter marketing strategy from many directions given the diversity. I've been avoiding digital marketing for some time. Marketing analytics are a big part of what I do, especially coding to analyze data. That's basically the job of a marketing analyst, although the term "marketing analyst" has often been mutilated too ad now it often refers to people who know something about Google Analytics but can't really do analytics and don't know even the basics of data analytics. Remote jobs makes things much more difficult. I talked to another marketers recently and, when asked about her main recommendations, the main one was to avoid remote jobs. At least until you were strong enough to do things by yourself as a very experienced marketer. I can often do my work remotely, and I still decide to go to my office. I'll write another post for a general view of marketing, at least how marketing used to be.
