drive is a sync tool vs SMB which is basically and only a direct access tool. I use drive to one-way-sync certain folders to my windows machine, which means that I have access to versioning of those files if I make changes which don't work, so I can roll back. I also use it to make sure that a copy of those particular files exist on my computer, should I need to access them when I don't have direct NAS access. If I need to modify files on the NAS, I use SMB, which is real-time access to the documents. You can set up drive to be able to do this as well, but I prefer to keep them separate. That way I always know I'm changing the file on the NAS, not the local copy. Answer from BackedUpBooty on reddit.com

Moving from SMB1 to SMB 2/3: Synology NAS, Windows and macOS
Hey everyone,I keep seeing a lot of Users with questions about the SMB Protocol issue. The reason Sonos can’t help is because none of that is within the sphere of their control. All of that setup and configuration is 100% in the User camp, something they should mention and have a better Support ... More on en.community.sonos.com

what exactly is SMB service
You’re using a NAS. Turn hybernation and sleep off. Leave the device on all the time. That’s it’s intended purpose. All the network services it provides like SMB will wake it up periodically. More on reddit.com

Moving from SMB1 to SMB 2/3: Synology NAS, Windows and macOS | Sonos Community
May 14, 2024 - I had been using a Domain/LDAP user to access the share. With SMB1 and NTLM1, this worked. Apparently with SMB2 and SMB3, Sonos wasn’t happy connecting. Reverting to a local user on the Synology for accessing the share allowed the Sonos to catalogue my music and work.

Setting up SMB Multichannel on a Synology NAS
May 5, 2025 - By providing simultaneous data paths, SMB multichannel ensures the network’s bandwidth is used efficiently and optimally, resulting in better network performance and faster data transfers. While you technically can increase network transfer speeds, you must be using devices and network infrastructure that can handle the increased network speeds. For example, if your Synology NAS has two NICs and SMB multichannel configured, the other device must be using SMB multichannel as well or have a 2.5GbE or higher NIC, with a Switch in between that supports those speeds as well.

r/synology on Reddit: what exactly is SMB service
December 15, 2019 -

i have a ds215j which is constantly waking up from hibernation on its own. i did the hibernation debugging in the dsm and then i waited 6 hours and then i generated the log and i sent it to synology

they said that the SMB service is waking up my nas drive every 30 minutes during those 6 hours. i mapped my nas to my laptop as a network drive and the SMB service is used whenever windows explorer accesses the network drive. however, in those 6 hours i wasn't using my laptop and i closed it so the SMB service should not run but it is and it's waking up my nas

the fault is on who? is it the fault of the dsm and there is a bug in it? or the fault is with me and there is something wrong with my router settings?

if i buy a new nas like for example the wd nas will i also get the same waking up issues due to the SMB service? or that issue is only in synology nas?
