Help: I need a resource for finding a single word to express an idea when the word doesn't exist in english.
"an opinion based on experience " That's "expertise". For searching for synonyms I use thesaurus.com (I know some people dislike this website though), and put in whatever the first word in my stream of conscious is for what I'm looking for, for example, if I'm trying to remember the word omen, I might try "voodoo" or "forboding", then click through the results and see if anything triggers my memory/reminds me what the word which on the tip of my tongue is, the word I'm looking for may be the first result anyway. If you have another thesaurus website you prefer then use that instead. More on reddit.com

DUDE WHY are there a LOT of synonyms for every single freaking word in English? Native and advanced level speakers, please tell me is there any difference between the words below, how often do you use them? thanks.
A lot of the difference is in the collocations of each word. For example, it might sound normal to say "His apartment is really grotty." But you wouldn't use grotty to describe food. Some of these words describe appearance, some can describe taste, some can describe character. Some are more formal "odious" but others more informal "skanky". They may all be fairly synonymous, but would be used in different contexts. WordReference.com gives good examples for each. Try to see this as richness and flexibility rather than redundancy.
