Joined T-Mobile in 2023–needed a phone NOW when switching jobs. Didn’t have a trade-in since my previous employers had always provided a phone. Got the 12 on the Go5G Plus plan and it’s fully paid off now.
Went into the store a few weeks ago and was told the 11 was the lowest trade-in accepted at the time, so it made sense that the 12 should work for the new 17. Associate suggested I trade in right at the launch for the best deal.
Now it seems the lowest trade accepted is the 13, so am I completely screwed again and stuck paying full price for a second phone in two years?
Would appreciate any advice and/or suggestions on how to proceed. I do want to stay with T-Mobile. Willing to upgrade plans if that will help lower the initial cost of the phone. FWIW I qualify for the first responder discount but never actually set it up—don’t know if that will help in this situation or not.
Looking specifically at the 17 Pro. I’ve never traded in a phone before so I don’t understand the whole process.

I’m on a grandfather plan and was looking to upgrade my old iPhone for the 17. Was told by by T-Mobile I can trade any iPhone damaged or not for $830 without changing my plan. It’s not advertised they call it in house targeted upgrade. Anyone have experience with this? Sounds fishy

So I work for T-Mobile customer care and can promise you the promo is real and you do not have to make any account changes like a rate plan change nor add a line. Now every account is not eligible for it though. You’d have to call in and they can see if you have the targeted promotion, also to say this promotion is only available through customer care, I’ve attempted to send some customers to the stores, followed up with them, and store claims they don’t see the promotion. I’ve had luck with experience stores being able to get a customer the promotion if they are a targeted customer. Additionally you only pay sales tax, no activation/upgrade fee. So if you have good account finance credit, you’re only paying sales tax. This promotion is very real and has been going on a little over a month. Of course you have to turn in your device within the time frame and it not be a lost/stolen device but just about any phone you can trade in. Don’t listen to the users here claiming it moves you to another plan, cause it does not if you have this targeted promotion I can assure you 100% best bet is to call and see if you have it.

Hi guys, this might seem like a dumb question but when I went on the website to get an estimated trade in value for the IPhone 14 for my iPhone 12, it says that the value is $829.99 and that a promotion has been applied. I’m a bit confused as even though my phone is in near perfect condition I’m skeptical that it would be valued that high, as it is an older model. Surely either I’m dumb enough to interpret it wrong or there’s some sort of catch.

It's not really valued at that much, but the catch is, you will have to stay for 2 years on your plan to get that value for it. T-Mobile isn't in the business of selling you a phone, they are in the business of selling you service. If you are on Go5G Plus, that is the amount you will get for your trade in. My advice to you, is to wait the month or so for the 15 to drop and get that, your 12 will still be valued at about that amount.

It is a promotion via bill credits. Several devices up to a few years old will all qualify for the full promo amount, their actual market trade in value (the only amount you get instantly) is much lower and does vary per device even though they all qualify for the full $830 overall. The amount after your market trade in value is deducted, is the amount you get back as bill credits. For example, if the phone is actually worth $100, you would get $730 as bill credits. Those bill credits are spread across the 24 months you finance the new phone for. You also need to stay on their most expensive plan for those 24 months. Canceling the line Or switching to cheaper plan will void the promo and stop the bill credits. So the reason they’re willing to give you that full promo amount is that they’re essentially making that back by locking you into a 2 year contract on their most expensive plan which is how they make their profit, since they don’t make anything off the phones themselves.
