I usually always have MSI afterburner open for the on screen display, but on this occasion I also had Windows Task Manager open on my second monitor.
The strange thing is, Task manager showed my CPU at 93-98% utilization while afterburner showed 77%-85% utilization.
Which one do I believe?
Hey ya'll,
Im trying to monitor my cpu usage in msi afterburner, i select the "CPU Usage" overlay in the monitor options. But when comparing the % in game to what task manager's performance tab show there is a big difference, task manager shows more usage than afterburner overlay.
Is afterburning only showing what the game is using?
I am correct to assume that task manager is showing me the full windows cpu usage including bg apps?
the below screenshot was taken on a physical machine with 8 cores, where all cores were at 100% and cpu speed was far ahead from the base 2.2 GHz speed.
i am pretty sure of it, as there was a video encoding going on (x264 with threads=24).
this one illustrates the per core usage.
both show very wrong processxp cpu utilization.
hope this will be fixed very soon.
Task Manager lies about CPU usage – it scales it according to CPU throttling, meaning that if your CPU's nominal speed is 4 GHz, and it's currently throttled to 2 GHz while all cores are fully utilised, Task Manager will show 50% CPU usage, while Process Explorer will show 100% CPU usage.
Hey everyone,
I am currently trying to diagnose an issue with a specific game I am playing. Last night I decided to monitor the game using the MSI Afterburner overlay (Specifically GPU and CPU usage) and I also had Windows 11 task manager up as well.
I noticed a pretty large discrepancy between both and wondered which I should consider more accurate and if this is normal.
At times I was seeing a 20% difference in readings on both the GPU and CPU. They seem to read lower on Task Manager as per the example below.
GPU Usage
Task Manager 50 - 70%
MSI Afterburner 80 - 95%
Any thoughts?
Hey guys thanks for any help in advance. So today I started up Rainbow 6 Siege and I could barely get 60 FPS and my RTX 2070 was getting pretty hot. Turned off V Sync turned it back on and boom it’s been just fine ever since. However I did notice that my gpu usage in Task manager was at 100% meanwhile in afterburner only at like 35-50 depending on what was going on in game. Temps were good and everything but why is it doing this. It doesn’t do this in Destiny 2 but it does in Rainbow 6 Siege and Left 4 Dead 2. Is this a big deal or should I just trust MSI afterburner that it’s running just fine?
I would really only use afterburner. Except for cpu usage, task manager can be ... Inaccurate

I recently opened another post talking about the bottleneck I could have and etc. and today I decided to try cyberpunk (ultra + no rt) with the msi afterburner and my surprise is that everything seems to be fine, something that the task manager does not reflect. Who should I listen to? I uploaded the photo to imgur https://imgur.com/a/I2Mu1Vy
Hey guys! I've been trying to monitor my CPU usage while playing BF1. It's very taxing on CPUs and I want to see how i can reduce the load. To do this I've been using MSI AfterBurner and task manager to check the usage. Both are giving me very different results with Task manager saying 100% usage all the time and MSI saying around 85%. So which one should I trust?
Are you sure that MSI afterburner isn't telling you GPU usage?
Perhaps you set it up so CPU core 1 ( or 8... or whatever.) is showing, as multiple cores can be under different loads. Check your afterburner settings, I usually have all 4 of my cores showing up, heat, and %.
Hello, I've been having frame rate issues for a long LONG time now. I have a moderately pricey PC but lately I have been struggling to run even Terraria at 60 fps.
The main thing that I'm confused about is that my task manager shows 21% CPU usage and MSI Afterburner shows 100%. This is while running a stress test trying some things out. I've googled all over but I've only found threads about task manager being higher, not the other way around. I've done so much to try to fix my frame problems, I've tried all the simple solutions online, the last thing I haven't tried is factory resetting and hoping that fixes it, but that is obviously a last resort.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you all in advance!
