r/thinkpad on Reddit: Experience with Thinkpad P1 gen 4 - is it actually bad?
February 6, 2022 -

Hi!

I've been in a market for a new laptop for a few months now. I need something for a long term and thus choosing between a Thinkpad and new macbook pro. Currently I am leaning towards a Thinkpad as it offers a longer warranty, upgradeability, tougher build and windows which I am used to. P1 seems like a great machine but I found a lot of negative reviews that mostly concentrate on it being too hot in the keyboard area and too loud. I also read that the keyboard area is not solid and leans under pressure. All in all, there are many mixed reviews.

So, I would appreciate some feedback from people that own P1 or X1 extreme gen 4. How do you like it? Are thermals and noise really that bad? Is it a machine that could last me years?

To give some extra details - I don't plan on using it for anything really demanding, I just like the big screen and components that will stay relevant for a long time. Just basic office and multimedia use with some adobe suite. Choosing between P1 with i7 and RTX A2000 and X1E with i7 and 3050

I have a P1 G4 with I7-11850H, RTX 3070, and 2560 x 1600 display. The keyboard is very solid IMO and though the key travel has been modified slightly from previous versions, its still the best laptop keyboard I have ever used. As for thermals, I've never experienced the keyboard getting too hot, not even when pushing the laptop hard while gaming and such. As for the fans, sometimes they will run at low speed and are audible if you listen carefully enough while having a ton of Chrome tabs open and whatnot, but they are definitely not loud IMO. When pushing the CPU or GPU the fans do kick up fast and you can definitely hear them but I wouldn't say they are louder than any other powerful laptop being pushed to its limits. For comparison, I also own a Razer Blade Pro 17 with an I7 and RTX 2080 and the fans are even louder when pushed hard. TLDR; I love this laptop and think its the best overall laptop for daily use. It can be used for productivity work or normal everyday tasks like browsing the web and whatnot and it stays quiet with good thermals and a battery that lasts about 7 hours. If I want to do some casual gaming, or have a CPU/GPU intensive workload to get done, it has the power to do so.

Lenovo p1 gen 4 battery life problems
Probably you can lower the CPU limit to 99% in the battery setting, which will disable the CPU turbo boost and get a slightly improved battery life as well as thermal and fan noise. More on reddit.com

Thinkpad P1 Gen 4 32GB/1TB/3070 mini review, it's good
Why did you buy this spec if you wanted double channel? It's mentioned in the specs if it will be double or single. This one is meant for people wanting to upgrade soon. All other versions have 2x16 mostly. I already ordered the second stick (I knew it's single and was gonna upgrade myself) More on reddit.com

P1 Gen 4: Opinions?

P1g3 had a pretty bad thermal throttling with i9 and t2000, i think this year would be even worse. p1 Chassis cannot run with i9 and 3080 at the same time

P1 Gen 4/X1 Extreme Gen 4 iGPU Battery Life
Can't tell about the 4th gens, however, I've been using my 1st gen with dGpu for 3 years now and the battery life I was getting with dGpu disabled was something like 8-9 hours. Now 3 years later it's more like 6-8 hours, depending on what I'm doing exactly (and of course battery life with dGpu enabled is truly bad). I'm using linux only and most of the day the laptop is docked with external monitor via the usb-c, with dGpu enabled. But when I'm off on vacation or working away from home/office, then I'm using it with the dGpu disabled. The 4th gens have bigger battery as far as I remember, so you should be able to get comparable or better battery life, I'd assume. Btw, if you get it with iGpu only, please report back how well 2k/4k external monitors are working via the hdmi and usb-c :) When the time comes to replace my first gen, the 16" 4th gens sounds like a really nice option... without the dGpu! Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 4 : RTX A5000 + Next-Gen Webcam | Ubergizmo
June 17, 2021 - This year’s ThinkPad P1 has a 16-inch 16:10 aspect ratio display, which many users requested to Lenovo and other OEMs. It’s nice because it does improve productivity, thanks to the extra vertical space. The specs suggest that the overall volume is comparable to last year’s model, so the P1 remains very portable. There’s a 4K and a 2560×1400 resolution option, and both are satisfactory, depending on what you are looking for. Generally, I recommend the 4K for Creative work and the lower resolution if you need more battery life.

December 6, 2021 - Connectivity on the ThinkPad P1 G4 is solid. On the right are an SD card reader, two USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 (the second is always-on and supports device charging while the laptop is powered off), and a Kensington NanoSaver lock slot. Photographers should be especially appreciative that the SD card reader is full-size. There may also be a SIM card slot here for the optional 4G/5G wireless mobile broadband. (Our review ...

The 1TB SSD isn't hugely generous. But, again, you can go up to 8 TB at the point of sale.
