Not sure if this is really the right subreddit just not sure where to ask this. Im and auto installer for car audio and video but always wondered what the professional way to install underglow is. There is no way a good installer just 3m tape leds like a lot of people do.

Make sure the surface is clean and has no oils on it. White vinegar, denatured alcohol, brake parts cleaner, or any other solvent that doesn’t leave a residue. The tape should last a long time and shouldn’t give you any problems.

It depends on the kit. 3Ms VHB is absolutely a viable installation option depending on the application and the prep given to the install. There's plenty of parts of cars that are VHB-ed in place in the factory so why wouldn't it be acceptable in the aftermarket? A major stumbling block for a lot of people is the prep. Most people have never looked at 3Ms instructions or actually bothered to follow them, or if they have seen it, they don't want to spend the time cleaning the underside of a vehicle to the degree required and potentially spend more money on 3Ms adhesion promoter or primer to get the desired outcome. It can also depend on the application to a degree. The underside of a vehicle is a harsh environment in most cases much less in day to day cases in particular climates. For someone's motorcycle or "fun" car that's only out for a quarter to a third of the year in the best weather and stored inside the rest of the time, you don't have to go as hard. For an off road rig or a daily thats gonna see snow, water, and every extreme of the weather spectrum it would make sense to go a more robust route that most probably don't actually want to pay for.
