If you want to estimate your energy consumption and thus the effect on your electricity bill, look for an EER rating on the label to figure out the energy consumed under standard testing conditions to produce the nominal cooling capacity. EER units are Btu per watt, so for example a 12 EER unit can move one ton of heat (12,000 Btu) in one hour by consuming 1,000 watts (or 1kWh, in that timeframe). Once you algebra out kWh using the rated efficiency, you can multiply against your projected runtime and electricity rate to estimate costs per period. If you want to be more precise, plug the unit into a kill a watt to directly measure the real world power drawn while in operation. I’m a high school chemistry teacher and I probably have kids that hate my class right now because we’re doing unit conversions and dimensional analysis. My best piece of advice is to keep doing guided practice with YouTube videos, khan academy, etc. The biggest “hint” for unit conversions is that you always know where to put what unit because they cancel out diagonally (I say cross cancel). Ex I want to convert 8.12 g/mL into kg/L. I know 1000 g = 1 kg and 1000 mL = 1 L. We always start by writing what we’re given as a fraction 8.2 g/1 mL I need to get rid of grams because my final answer is in kg. Since grams is on top of my fraction, I need a new fraction with grams on bottom. This fraction is our conversion factor. (8.2 g / 1 mL) x (1 kg / 1000 g) Now I know I need to get rid of mL because my final answer is in L. Since mL is on the bottom of my fraction, I need a new fraction with mL on top. We’ll use our conversion factor (8.2 g / 1 mL) x (1 kg / 1000 g) x (1000 mL / 1 L) Now I can cross cancel my units and multiply my numerators straight across and my denominators straight across to get (8200 kg / 1000 L) And divide to get 8.2 kg / L Unfortunately typing it up like this isn’t the easiest to read but hopefully it helps a little :) More on reddit.com
