It is used by the update all script for the official downloads and can also be configured to download everything else. I am not sure for the update script but as the update all script is not official the update script can be used after a fresh install to update MISTer.

January 6, 2024 - Thanks to this DB, this utility is now better integrated with MiSTer. You'll find this option on the Tools & Scripts menu. Here is the GitHub organization. Kudos to 40wattrange for pulling the strings on this! As usual, with each release, there is a long list of improvements, fixes, and other minor changes corresponding to mundane maintenance tasks. I won't go through all of them, but I will highlight some of the most important:

Been putting it off for years, because the Mister was doing everyhing I wanted, but, if the internet archive may go offline for good, I'd kind of like to nuke it, start fresh, and run update_all to get all the arcade stuff up and running.
On this day, 10/28, is it working?

It won’t download any of the arcade releases released in the last 3ish weeks (from the 10th when it first went down). No one has been able to log in and maintain the latest release roms, so you’ll get the RBFs and MRAs, but not the games themselves. That will hopefully be sorted out soon?

September 30, 2021 - A note for anyone using the update_all script: It should just auto-update the next time you run it and add the new downloader, but if you have a custom.ini file, you might need to manually enable it by hitting “Up” as it boots, entering the “misc” menu and toggling the new downloader.

I have always been hesitant to run Update All for months and months. Today I decided to finally plug my Mister with the ethernet cable and after running the script.... the list of Cores has been cut down by more than half. I'm approximating more than half due to how quickly I reach the bottom of the list of Cores when scrolling down.
NES, Playstation, Genesis, etc, gone. Strangely, when I put the SD card into my PC, the folders are present. They don't appear when using my Mister.
Any advice or suggestions?
EDIT: Correction, the GAMES folder still has each folder named after the missing consoles, but the "_Console" folder itself only shows the short Core list.

Wow, cores from 2022. We got an antique here, fellas! Update_all is designed to be a one-stop shop. There's really no reason to be afraid of running it. The worst that can happen is it fails to update a few things because filenames get changed or whatever, then you just delete the folder and let it rebuild. You're most likely having the issue because there has been a major update to the script since the last time you ran it, and you will need to go to the github and download the latest version. After that, the script should update itself.

This is fine if you are downloading a single core, replacing or editing a single file or something of the like. Its only good for small changes and not for general updates. You still need Update or Update_All if you want to update the Mister framework or the Linux installation on the SD card.

Using the MiSTer - MiSTer FPGA Bible
Once its installed, you can simply run the updater from the Scripts menu. Open up the System Menu (F12) Navigate to Scripts, then run “update” (use the cursor to move and press enter to select). It will download all the latest cores for you and keep your MiSTer updated.

Hey guys! trying to run the update_all script on my mister, however it's not ever allowing me to enter the options menu (Despite pressing up on the keyboard) - is there a way to preemptively configure the script to fetch roms?
Or, is there a way I can run the update_all script on my pc and transfer the files over to the sd card when I'm done? https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/Downloader_MiSTer/blob/main/docs/pc-launcher.md <- ive tried running this python script but no luck.
Some help would be very appreciated, thanks everyone
