July 5, 2020 - I just wasn’t sure I’d like when you used Mercari labels if when UPS was the label you used if it was included. But based on the responses, the extra cost is NOT worth it at all! ... Simple Rate... What's the catch? ... I am the manager of a UPS Store - i've been packing AND shipping your Christmas presents! AMA! ... Trying to send a package to NL.

r/upsstore on Reddit: How much would you charge for this pack job?
July 13, 2023 -

We had a complex pack job (have had a few similar ones of this size in the past) and we always run into the issue of the customer complaining about packaging cost.

The item was some sort of decorative art piece. The only way I can describe it is similar to an octopus lol. There was a main piece and then 8 or 9 smaller pieces connected to the main one by strings.

We had to individually wrap the smaller pieces and the main piece and secure the strings safely.

It took 3 people a couple of hours. We had to telescope 2 of the 25 cubed boxes. The final dimensions were 51x28x28 and it weighed 60 pounds.

The customer was shipping it from one of her house to her other house on the opposite side of the country. Shipping cost came out to be about $570 (ground). For reference, we are in California and wages are $18 to 23.

For labor and materials, how much would you have charged?

Edit: they ended up not shipping with us because they found the total shipping + packing cost too outrageous but they did pay for packing

Hi, I’ve been using Pirate ship to send UPS packages for a couple months now, but today my quotes look insanely expensive. These are padded 11x9 envelopes to send within the US. Everything under 1 pound. Is this normal? Thanks

May 11, 2020 - (USPS is really strict on this, if you're not shipping priority, they don't let you use their tape) If you have zero packing material at home, then your best bet is go to UPS store and buy their box and bubble wrap. It shouldn't cost too much though. Just make sure you pack the item well, especially for collection items like Funko pop. ... Did you choose pack and ship? In that case they’ll package it for you for free (the charge is already included)

Get gang...

I'm using Stamps.Com (for 10yrs or so now)

I normally sell/ship small items (like coffee mugs, shot glasses, barware, etc..). About half of my stuff ships under 1lb so I send it USPS first class ($4-6). The other half is just over 1lb but less than 2lbs. I use padded bubble mailers and a 7x5x4 Uline Box (fits inside the bubble mailer... barely!). $8.45

Once in a while I sell something bulkier and heavier (like maybe a cast iron skillet, or waffle iron). Today I was shipping an item like that... It was 6-1/2 lbs, 16x10x7. Going from AZ to Maryland (lotsa zones away)

USPS was $29! Oof. (Item didn't fit in any flat rate boxes)

So, Stamps now offers UPS.. so I checked. 4-day ground was $15, and 3-day was $23.

Dang.. that's like HALF!

So, what's the catch!?

I have read horror stories of huge adjustment charges, but I made sure to enter dimensions... And it's not really big enough to be a "dimensional weight" problem.

Anyone had a big adjustment charge back after the fact when quoted a low up front rate on stamps?

June 23, 2024 - Another reason: we are not a fucking storage unit. ... There’s no “set” fee - every store is independently owned and can set different prices depending on what they want to charge · Some stores charge $5 to print a label, some $2 , some $3. It’s up to what the owner wants to charge

r/UPS on Reddit: Are Express envelopes supposed to be free in store?
September 9, 2024 -

TL:DR - are UPS Express envelopes in store supposed to be free if you are paying for UPS Express service?

Bit miffed and I should have caught this before I paid and drove off because I would have inquired right then and there.

Needed to send something UPS 2 day so I stopped by my local UPS Store, no UPS express envelopes out in the lobby so I just said I need to send this Express can I have an envelope please. Was pointed to the non-UPS envelopes in the lobby that cost $$$, no thanks its simply a cashiers check and can fit in the standard UPS express envelope. He digs one out of the back somewhere - ya know standard size cardboard thing. Rings me up and I pay and go on my happy way.

After I leave I am reviewing my receipt and was charged $3.50 for a Tyvek envelope, wait what? Yeah $3.50 isn't even worth my time to go back and complain about but for me it is the principle behind the sneaky up charge. If I am wrong about the Express envelopes being part of the shipping cost I will slide away quietly but I feel like that is not the case.

September 1, 2023 - It was a distraction and deterrent to you. P as shipping consumers revenue (shipping) were down. And as to keep up with the quarterly and annual need for revenue and revenue profits, it is a sad decision that UPS corporation had to increase their fees as such. AGAIN 3.33% PER PARCEL OR PACKAGE!

We charge $2.99 + tax as the "email fee" and charge $.20 per page after the first. $.70 if color copy.

Our customer computer is also not working, as I'm told my, and was wondering what everyone else's charges.

Surprisingly almost all customers who are told about this printing fee pay for it, very few freak out. Is this a good amount to charge?

r/UPS on Reddit: Why did it cost me $1000 to ship a 12 pound package from California to the Philippines
December 2, 2018 -

A little background: I am sponsoring a really poor family in the Philippines and I sent a gift to them (weighing 12 lbs) to arrive before Christmas. I wanted it to arrive as soon as possible so I chose the Worldwide Expedited service.

I guess I am super naive: This is my first time sending a package to the Philippines and when the worker showed me the quote of $987 (plus packaging, which came out to be over $1000), I thought that this was standard (I mean, the worker was so cavalier about it). So I accepted the price.

I am wondering why UPS has a cost of $905 for Worldwide Expedited service. My family was really shocked to hear about the cost. I was told that it doesn't cost this much. I went back to the store and said that there might have been an error in the system and that it shouldn't cost around $1000 to send a package to the Philippines, but the worker said to me: "Here, it does."

Does UPS do a price hike during the December holiday season? I just want an answer to why it is so expensive.

Edit 1: I got a quote from the UPS website and it says that $278.38 - so I am wondering why the store charged me triple that value.

r/Explainlikeimscared on Reddit: Figuring out UPS mail services
October 6, 2024 -

I'm a gen z New Yorker and have rarely ever needed to mail something myself, and the whole process confuses me. I've recently started an Etsy, though, so it's probably best that I figure it out. The thing is, I'm kind of baffled about all the different types of USPS/UPS mail services (priority, priority express, first-class-etc.). I know that some ship faster than others and they cost different amounts, but that's the extent of it. Like, how do I mail something to ensure a specific service is used? Is it based on price, or what box I put it in? How do I know if I'm paying the right amount for something (I'm using forever stamps btw)? Does shipping something internationally have a different process? I would really appreciate it if someone could walk me through these things assuming that I really don't know anything about mail, because I'm having trouble finding a straightforward answer online. Thanks!

Edit: At the moment I'm not sending any big packages, only small things that can be sent in envelopes. I mostly need clarification for anything regarding mailboxes hehe

Hi, USPS carrier here! If you want the post office to mail things for you, the best bet is to go in and talk to a clerk. A few guidelines: if it's more than 10oz or 1/2" thick, you can't just use stamps, it has to be accepted by a clerk and get a barcode on it Express is guaranteed 1 or 2 day delivery to most locations, if it's late you get your money back. If you put something in an Express box it will automatically be sent as Express. Anything over 13oz is priority mail. Edit: I have been corrected. Parcel post exists, and you CAN send priority mail for less. USPS can pick up packages from your house for free. Most of our services can be accessed online at USPS.com. If you have more specific questions you can DM me. We are not the same as UPS, it's the United States Postal Service vs United Parcel Service.

It’ll depend on what you’re selling, but as far as I know, Etsy should provide you with shipping labels for whatever it is. They’re mostly concerned with the tracking number to ensure it was sent and delivered. I only sell on Mercari, but they generally have two or three USPS options and which one you use is either based on the weight of the item you’re selling and/or the price of the item. For example, I sell trading cards. If it’s a card worth under $20, I’ll use the $1 label since the insurance for that covers up to $20. If it’s more, I use the $4 tracked label, because that insurance covers up to $75, but both of them have weight limits. There are further options for media mail or heavier items. Also afaik Forever Stamps aren’t valid on packages, just letters/postcards and things of that nature. Regardless, Etsy should provide you with labels. Then you can print them out and adhere to your packaging (I bought a thermal printer for this). Larger items I drop at the post office or schedule a pickup (you can do this online), but anything mailbox-sized I just stick in there like regular mail.

r/UPS on Reddit: What is the point of UPS Express boxes, paks, and envelopes?
September 14, 2020 -

These are not flat rate. The price is exactly the same if you use UPS packaging or your own packaging. If you use your own packaging AND you also stick it in a UPS Pak, you're getting charged for the extra weight and dimensions that the Pak adds.

This is the exact opposite of Fedex Express. All Fedex Express packaging is flat rate. It is always cheaper to ship in Fedex packaging than it is to ship a box. Fedex also provides negotiated flat rates if you use their packaging. They really want you to use their packaging.

Can an account rep give me flat rate or reduced rate if I use UPS packaging? Does that even exist? If that's not possible, why would anyone ever use UPS packaging for any reason?

Edit: I know 'UPS Simple Rate' exists, but the rates are terrible and they make it clear that negotiated rates do not exist. Are negotiated rates on UPS Simple Rate possible?

May 2, 2025 - If it was a package, sure.. but it was one A4 paper. ... That's the price for urgency. If it was 1 sheet of A4 paper and wasn't time sensitive, you could've mailed in a letter envelope for like $1.65 by postal service.
