Look in Device Mangler in the device properties and get the hardware ID. Then Google that, and it should point you at the adapter or chipset mfgr's website, to download the driver. For future though, just buy one based on an FTDI chip and it'll plug and play in Windows. Other common chips will too, but FTDI seems to be the most reliable in operation. More on reddit.com

The prolific adaptors seem to have issues after version updates with windows 10. When they work, you still have to trick the PLC programming software by updating the Prolific driver to a generic Microsoft USB to serial. The newest version of Windows screwed up two programming workstations so far.. We use Omron and Click PLC's.
Does anybody have a tried and true tested USB to serial solution that works with Win 10? I have been tempted to add PCI serial cards to move forward so I don't mind serial card recommendations either.

Anything legit FTDI is rock solid, non legit will get bricked by the FTDI drivers.

Hey yall. New to the automation world. I've got a SLC5 that I'm trying to go online with using an rs232 adapter. I'm missing the driver. The adapter is old as hell so I cant tell the brand. Do I need to download the driver straight from the manufacturer's website? Or is there a general driver i could download.
Ive done this before using different adapters, but I knew the manufacturer in those cases

Just get any adapter with a FTDI FT232RL Chip. Have been using these for years with Win 7/8/10, Linux/BSD and OSX on one side and Cisco, HP, Raritan, whatever devices on the other side. Never had any problems, it just works. No 3rd party driver needed as well.
