The 3 part form hasn't been a required part of international mailing for going on 6 years now. Customs forms must all be digital, the details are attached to the barcode on the customs form. You're welcome, if you really want to, to put additional copies inside, but only the postage one is required to be on the package anymore. More on reddit.com

Put everything into the shipping box and weigh it - that's your total weight. Then, add up the weights of the individual items such that it's equal to the total weight of the box and contents. Each item must be a minimum weight of 1 oz and have a minimum value of .01 - try to combine similar items and adjust the quantity/weights/values accordingly. It sucks when customers have an additional page of items because it all wouldn't fit on the first page of the form. Don't put "bag of tiny common fossils"; simply use "Fossils". Just use PirateShip.com and pay for the postage at the same time rather than monkeying around with doing the customs forms separate and then trying to pay postage at what is likely a manual office. "Scan prepaid acceptance, please, thank you, bye." The account there is free, you'll also get price comparisons to UPS (not that UPS is ever cheaper), and you just have to print the label/customs form label which you can put on the front of your package. As for the specific issue, they're likely trying to scan it pre-paid acceptance and it's not postage, it's just the customs form. The computer should prompt for the customs form scan if it's not a manual office, and if it is a manual office, they can't accept digital customs forms anyway. More on reddit.com

Yes; you can even fill them out from USPS.com and print them out. There's also supposed to be a new feature that lets you fill them out online and then it gives you a QR code that the clerks can scan and that will print out the forms. More on reddit.com

Usually when I ship a package internationally, the post office has a small plastic envelope that I can use to put three copies of the shipping label/customs declaration form into on the outside of the package. I guess they didn't have any of these envelopes today, so the clerk told me to tape all three copies directly onto the package. Is this allowed? Or should I buy some plastic envelopes to put the forms in? I was reading online that it should be in a plastic sleeve. I just want to avoid any trouble if I get a different clerk when I go back to drop it off. Thank you!

I'm sending a Christmas gift to a friend in Australia, but I don't know how the customs forms work. It asks for the weight and price of every item, and says it will be validated against the total weight. A lot of things are free, is $0 acceptable? And some things are like stickers, and literal pieces of paper... like a flyer, and a single coloring sheet/info page on a local park... how do I get a weight for these?
Plus, I have a lot of little chunks of fossil pieces (confirmed with US customs, and Australia customs, and the US Office of Law Enforcement that these are allowed to be shipped to Australia) but the customs forms say "weight" and "how many". They are so small, I don't know that a weight will even pick up... would "a bag of tiny common fossils" and the combined weight of the bag be appropriate, or how would I list that?

Edit: in case anyone sees this and is also wondering! The forms specific not to lump things together and to be as specific as possible... there are not many lines at all, and I had to lump everything together in vague categories lol. Like any form of papers, brochures, stickers, photos, etc I put under "stationary". The package sent perfectly fine with no issues!
