What exactly is Visual Studio Code? - Stack Overflow
Recently I've read about Microsoft ... My question is whether Visual Studio Code is just a simple editor which uses whatever compiler exist in the platform, gcc in my case, as a background compiler or does it come with its own VS compiler?... More on stackoverflow.com

VS Code is a special type of text editor that is called a compiler?
probably because of Recall that computers really only understand zeros and ones. Therefore, when you run python hello.py, python will interpret the text that you created in hello.py and translate it into the zeros and ones that the computer can understand. but it is a completely wrong to call VS Code a compiler COMPLETELY WRONG More on reddit.com

Like the other comment states, I also use the terminal. For C, I used 'make filename.c' to compile. Then 'run filename' to run the executable file. For Python, i use 'python filename.py' since you don't need to complie More on reddit.com

September 10, 2024 - In this article, I'll show you how to set up your compiler in VsCode and give you some links to some of the best C++ resources. November 3, 2021 - Install the C/C++ extension for VS Code. You can install the C/C++ extension by searching for 'C++' in the Extensions view (β‡§βŒ˜X (Windows, Linux Ctrl+Shift+X)). Get the latest version of MinGW-w64 via MSYS2, which provides up-to-date native builds of GCC, MinGW-w64, and other helpful C++ tools and libraries. This will provide you with the necessary tools to compile your code, debug it, and configure it to work with IntelliSense.

Quote from here: https://cs50.harvard.edu/python/2022/notes/0/

I just started the online Python course, and the very first sentence of the CS50P notes says, β€˜VS Code is a special type of text editor that is called a compiler.’ I’m obviously new to programmingβ€”hence why I’m taking the courseβ€”but that doesn’t seem correct at all.

UPDATE: It has been corrected.

r/vscode on Reddit: How do I compile and run?
September 4, 2024 -

I’ve been programming for years now, in multiple languages. I’ve never used an IDE or anything like vs code. I usually just use a text editor and a terminal to do all my coding.

This whole process is starting to get annoying so I downloaded vs code but I cannot get anything to work. I don’t know what I am doing. According to the tutorials, I should be able to press the debug and run button and vs code will compile and run my code, but I can’t get this to work. It’s saying I need a configuration, or that blah blah blah.

So far, I’ve only been able to get python to work. So my questions are: what is a configuration? Why do I need one? How do I get c++ to work with the push of one button?

The build tasks are project specific. To create a new project, open a directory in Visual Studio Code.

Following the instructions here, press Ctrl + Shift + P, type Configure Tasks, select it and press Enter.

The tasks.json file will be opened. Paste the following build script into the file, and save it:

{
    "version": "0.1.0",
    "command": "make",
    "isShellCommand": true,
    "tasks": [
        {
            "taskName": "Makefile",

            // Make this the default build command.
            "isBuildCommand": true,

            // Show the output window only if unrecognized errors occur.
            "showOutput": "always",

            // Pass 'all' as the build target
            "args": ["all"],

            // Use the standard less compilation problem matcher.
            "problemMatcher": {
                "owner": "cpp",
                "fileLocation": ["relative", "${workspaceRoot}"],
                "pattern": {
                    "regexp": "^(.*):(\\d+):(\\d+):\\s+(warning|error):\\s+(.*)$",
                    "file": 1,
                    "line": 2,
                    "column": 3,
                    "severity": 4,
                    "message": 5
                }
            }
        }
    ]
}

Now go to menu File β†’ Preferences β†’ Keyboard Shortcuts, and add the following key binding for the build task:

// Place your key bindings in this file to overwrite the defaults
[
    { "key": "f8",          "command": "workbench.action.tasks.build" }
]

Now when you press F8 the Makefile will be executed, and errors will be underlined in the editor.
