I really wanted to watch this movie when it was first announced, and hated it when I heard it has voice overs and a childish story and narration.
To which I am surprised to hear that there is a version called “Walking with dinosaurs: Prehistoric Planet 3D”, where the voices of the dinosaurs were removed and the narration was done by Benedict Cumberbatch.
Does anyone know of a way for me to view or purchase the movie? I really feel like watching it to be able to watch a recent walking with dinosaurs that is apparently good. I have a Pal ps4, and I don’t mind getting a blue ray to watch it.
Alright, so this might be a hot take but I believe that Prehistoric Planet is basically superior to Walking with Dinosaurs in every objective capacity. Mind you, this doesn't mean I think Walking with Dinosaurs is bad, in fact it's quite the opposite, WWD is probably the second greatest thing ever that has to do with dinosaurs for me.
Scientific Accuracy: Obviously since it's 20+ years after but the truth still stands. A lot of WWD is heavily outdated and its designs do not stand the test of time, especially the Tyrannosaurus rex and Utahraptor.
Animation: Once again, Prehistoric Planet easily wipes WWD across the floor with this one. The animals blend better into the real environments and move more naturally
Animal Model Quality: All the animal models are just better and more detailed. Simple.
Animal Behaviors: Prehistoric Planet gives more unquie and interesting behaviors to its animals, while mostly speculative, everything is still within the realm of possibility.
Cinematography: Prehistoric Planet simply has better shots. Now granted, there is a 20+ gap in technology but like what I said, it's still true regardless.
Sound Quality/Design: The sounds are more accurate for one as we know now that dinosaurs could not roar and they sound clearer. What I mean is that when you hear roars from WWD, they obviously sound like they're from the 90s. Like a more vintage sounding cry, ya know.
Animal Variety: Prehistoric Planet showcases more generas of animals than WWD and within a shorter time frame. Around 60 different genuses of animals were shown for the last 6 million years of the Mesozoic compared to around 30-40 in WWD for the entire 186 million year long period that is the Mesozoic. And to put it in perspective, if we divide the time length by amount of animals, it is roughly 1 animal per 100,000 years for PP while it would be 1 animal per 6,200,000 to 4,650,000 years for WWD.
What I will give to WWD is that it's soundtrack is more memorable and while I adore Sir David Attenborogh's voice, Kenneth Branagh's narration just suited the topic just a little bit better. And for the final thing, the narrative structure, neither one is really better than the other. It's simply a personal preference on which way the show is presented you like more. I personally don't mind the more modern nature documentary style that Prehistoric Planet has as it really sells the animals as real animals since they're treated the same way as extant species. Not to mention, it makes it more unquie among Paleo media as that type of presentation has not really been done with prehistoric animals before.
Feel free to disagree with me as disagreement and discourse is necessary for a conversation but anyways, those are just my personal thoughts.
